  1. That brought back some memories. Played AGTFOS a lot when I was in Falklands with the RAF back in the 80s
  2. We did a cruise form Wigrams Turn to Coventry and back in July. Although I'm glad we did it, I'm not sure whether I'd do the bit into Coventry again. To be honest we were all a bit disappointed with the basin, a bit depressing we thought. We, too, wondered about the coconuts.

  7. Hi all Been looking on line at canal videos and have come across Waterway Routes (http://www.waterwayroutes.co.uk) and Videoactive (http://www.canal-dvds.com/). Any recommendation as to which to get?
  8. 'Rodney' was a disparaging term for an officer when I was in the Forces. Usually pronounced 'Wodney'

  10. Hopefully, that'll be how it turns out for her
  11. As an owner of two dogs, one who is wary of other dogs, I'd never heard of this but will start to use it. I'll also be sharing it on Facebook to get the word out.
  12. Thanks again for all the great advice and a 'Greenie' to harleyj
  13. How does it know which it's supposed to do?
  14. I'd like to thank everyone for their suggestions. It certainly has given food for thought. I think the 'hand on hand' is definitely something I'll try. 'In at the deep end' I'll give a miss as I value my skin too much Thanks again. I'll let you know how we get on.
  15. Hi all Any advice on how I can convince my wife that she is as capable of steering a narrowboat as anyone else? We are both in our 60s and have recently bought a share in a 60' boat. As you've probably guessed, my idea! My wife enjoys the trips we have had but is very reluctant to take the tiller, as in, never! This means that she has, up to now, worked most of the locks. However, she finds these a struggle and I have, in effect, been single-handing through a lot of them. I've suggested training and at the the Crick Show even Terry of TR Boat Handling couldn't get her to sign up. So has anyone had a similar problem with someone you know would be fine but just lacks the confidence?
  16. As an owner who has unfortunately lost several dogs, we give retired greyhounds a homes, which tends to mean when we get them they can be quite old. I've always found the following to be a spur to getting another (never a replacement though). A Dog's Last Will & Testament Before humans die, they write their last will and testament, giving their home and all they have to those they leave behind. If, with my paws, I could do the same, this is what I’d ask… To a poor and lonely stray, I’d give my happy home; my bowl and cozy bed, soft pillow and all my toys; the lap, which I loved so much; the hand that stroked my fur; and the sweet voice that spoke my name. I’d will to the sad, scared, shelter dog the place I had in my human’s loving heart, of which there seemed no bounds. So, when I die, please do not say, “I will never have a pet again, for the loss and the pain is more than I can stand.” Instead, go find an unloved dog, one whose life has held no joy or hope, and give my place to him. This is the only thing I can give… The love I left behind. – Author Unknown
  17. Quote from the above link "A fire service spokesman said it was originally thought to have been a “hazardous materials incident”." Possibly the reason for all the resources being deployed?

  19. I'm in the process of deciding whether to go ahead and purchase a share in a NB. To be honest, having lurked on here for a couple of months and read some of the very heated threads which seem to dispel all illusion of the canals being the a relaxing place with a shared camaraderie, I'd nearly decided not to. However, your post has re-affirmed that it is not an illusion, but that perhaps I should be a bit more selective about reading the forum. Thanks Lady Cassandra P.S. You moved me to make my first post
