  1. i always thought you had to have pressure in the crankcase to force the oil or fuel/oil mix back passed the piston rings in order for it to run on its own oil so the breather would have to be blocked ? Gary

  15. Hi all , Some of you may know im looking at mooring on the basingstoke when i have the boat finished? so i thought id first hire a boat and have a first hand look at it from the water. so we hired a 47ft boat out of Galleon Marine in Odium, picked it up at 1 on tuesday first glance we thought it was a bit tatty but it was clean and every thing worked. As for the canal at this time of year the leaves were a constant problem fowling the prop, having to clear it every 5 mins or so, there are some lovely houses along the way and what surprised me most,of them had access to the canal but moorings if they had them were overgrown?, why with access to a waterway would you not use it. We could only go as far as the top lock no29 because of the restrictions and having to book to descend the Deepcut flight, but we made our way to the Fox and Hounds for the first night got there and only past 3 nb's very lonely canal at this time of year?, on our journey i found out loads of things with this boat that i would and wouldn't be doing to our's the main one was i do believe for us a reverse lay out would work better. There are not many places to moor as you wind your way up to the canal center and shops to stock up with are very few . its not very deep either struggled in a couple of places but there is an abundance of wildlife we saw two kingfishers and loads of other bird life, in its relatively short run from Odium to Deepcut top lock there's a massive valley the canal crosses goes through the army barracks and two aquaducts, the water is very clear and loads of fish, we met up with another boat on its way back to the Wey and after talking with Mike for a bit found out we both come from Horsham! only boats on the water and we both live in the same town miles away, The canal its self is quiet wooded in the bit we could nav not too many distant views just tree lined canal but with loads of flashes and lakes along its length there was one lake with a floating restaurant on it and a pub in the guide says boaters are welcome when you get there it all blocked off and chained up looks like it has been for ages (yearseven), most dissapointing that was. The jury is still out on weather we take a mooring or not its the not wanting to get trapped in there that worries me ? The Wey is so expensive though stil we shall see
  16. i should have took pics of the engine room it was full to the table deck with bricks all covered in thick engine oil of course, it had broken concrete slabs in to start with but again smothered in oil and crap funny thing was you couldn't smell it not till i started taking it apart , just aswell i did lol, i have found out the base has been over plated with 6mm plate something i dont think the previous owner couldn't have known about because of the price i payed for it? as for the bulk head i would feel happier with it higher, and as yours it was timber but full of holes and not fitted properly at all, The hand rails are going to be a pain, will try it out and will post on here the results , the trouble with bolts right though the roof is im trying to aviod drill right through as much as i can, another hole to seal up? the gunwhales are even a bit narrower now with the extra steel i put on there, im tring to find the best way to heat the water as at the mo we have a aidle heater not sure if its enough?
  17. Hi Neil thanks for that just got back from a week on the basingstoke so just seen your post , i have a plan for the hand rail going to cut the top out of the up stands take out the timber and fill with resin, then screw a new rail to that it seems the water gets into the timber inserts freezes or just swells and splits the grp,? the lister is coming on nicely there's a bit about it in the engine topics. the boat had both sides of the engine bilges full to the top with ballast im not going to replace that will leave it out. the engine has its own bilge now and im going to raise the rear bulkhead to the gunwales as its only about 160mm high hence all that oil in the cabin we found. having just hired a boat out of galleon marine we have found out a few things to do and not to do on ours it has been really helpfull to see as i was looking to moor on there , Going to replace the water tank with a new one and was going to leave an area around it to trim up the ballast.as for the cruiser stern at the mo it all drains into the bilges so im get a delivery of channel to make a new draining deck, as for the long haul it didnt start out that way but i think its worth doing Many thanks Gary was going to fill the floor with one layer of blocks you can see in pics any thoughts to much or not enough?
  18. thanks im contenplating a mooring on there for a bit so have hired a boat out of galleon marine next tuesday and was going to have a cabbie up and down
  19. Hi does anyone know if you can wind at the top of lock 28 the one with the dry dock, that is coming from the canal centre towards the wey and wind before the lock to return to the centre ?
