  1. The wheelhouse on our small Dutch (modern) barge is normally 2.98m above water level. This includes our solar panels on top of the wheelhouse. Our notes on our regular route from Nottingham Steps to Leeds via Keadby ,Doncaster and New Junction tell us Amber Warning:- Newark Mill Bridge 4.00m Newark Town Bridge 3.70 Thorne Railway Bridges 3.60 Barnby Dun Footbridge 3.42 Barnby Dun Rail Bridge 3.52 Heck Road Bridge 3.71 Leeds Crown Point 3.62 Disclaimer:- this is at normal river/canal levels.
  2. To support David's comment, I picked up a builder's bag coming into Goole off the river and after trying to remove it via the weedhatch with no effect, a very kind gentleman came alongside in a small dinghy and quickly pulled it off with my boathook.
  3. We were chugging up the Ouse one day towards York when a nice suitcase came floating towards us. Oh look I said. I bet it's full of cash. Mrs P said " Most likely a dead body. So I let it go.
  4. Top of our list for mechanisation/electrification would be Fall Ings Wakefield. We can just about manage the bottom gates but not for much longer I fear.
  5. Sorry. I did not realise that it would need an explanation to such experienced boaters. A bore is a wave of water occasionally driven up a tidal river on an exceptional spring tide. This tide does not necessarily have to occur in Spring. On the Trent this if often referred to as the Aegir.

  8. Pathetic. Whilst Hitler was a bad man in many ways, he did some nice paintings and was a dog lover. I don't recall any criticism regarding his language but you can hear bad language every night on tv or in the high street.

  10. One reason for home-made bread keeping better than supermarket or national bakers' is that home-made bread is made with less water than mass produced.
