  1. Ben isn't far off that. Bring a lock key to Caen & have a go at a full lift on a bottom gate paddle, then come back to us with your thoughts.
  2. Only just back in. You are entirely correct. Watching hirers with ipods etc. plugged into their ears. Not even able to hear the engine on its limiter! Scary.
  3. Sorry but no you cannot. Lift pawl and you then have to hand crank. In fact some struggle to close and the paddle gear starts twisting off the gate face.
  4. See there has been another flurry of boats and cills mating! [sorry info read on the dark side] A lot of comments made about dropping bottom paddles quickly etc. Did Caen last week and almost all the bottom gates had reduction gearboxes on them meaning that it requires dozens of turns to shut each one so it is not a quick event to close down. Especially if single handing. Are these common across the system or are they just additions to cover up poor paddle operations? Have ended up just cracking 1 paddle and being careful and slow.
  5. Hi. Sorry to have moved slightly off of OP. Sir Nibs seems to have put it far better than I. Non-liveaboard CCers are much in prevalence around most of Somerset, Wiltshire, Berkshire. Often find 20 odd boats at a time all moored up with no liveaboards on. But it seems to be the assumption that they are all occupied. Also due to the state of the system on the K&A there is very limited mooring due to shallow points [painted boats quote in the offing methinks!] Therefore it appears that small communities pop up in the same places. It's just that there is limited mooring without causing more of a hindrance with your stern 8-10 foot off the bank. Having said that CaRT seem to be sorting out some of towpath banks.[Milkhouse for instance] Wattle and daub mind. Suppose that if some of the silt was then removed people would be able to moor in different places and it would then 'appear' that greater boat movements were happening.
  6. They're great. Especially when 2 fat boats meet. Even better I had 2 dozen canoes come up behind me just as I entered the run! They were not happy.
  7. Yep. Carl runs the Bistro downstairs & Nige runs the bar. Vast improvement on previous years. Recommended. P.S. Betty. Did you enjoy the reeds through Bishops so much you are going back for a second try? Saw you come through All Cannings on Monday[i think]
  8. Yet another cc debate. Goody. Quick aside as a genuine question. When did cc = live aboard? Reading some of these topics the impression they are one and the same. Yep I live on the k&a ! Am in row of about 15 boats at the moment. Apparently only a couple have residents aboard. I know at least 3 of them belong to occasional boaters who live in the locality & never seem to leave the pound. The rest are either at the terminus of life or being revamped. Have had to join the row as anyone who has travelled this section will know there is VERY limited points that anyone can actually moor without the use of a 10ft gangplank! Of course you can moor like that but then become a navigation hazard to everyone else. Anyway back to initial question. When did cc = live aboard?

  10. yeah it prob. is. Don't need to look at it often enough to learn the pedantics tbh. oops that's the kiss of reliability gone! Even so principles of what said may hold true which was the main point.
  11. Can you measure it? A rule of thumb 100cm cube = 1000litre a bit of maths and away you go. Or fill it and then empty into known vessels and add up? Or empty tank. Time how long it takes to fill a known size vessel [like a 25 litre drum] then time tank fill? Or accept that in normal use it last 3,5,10 days. Or whatever? The last is probably the most useful. Sorry should have linked to water tank size OT topic.
  12. Hi. Pulled my 9kw C out after a couple of years for a check and was clear. I have a large load on it as in Caly, 5 rads and a fat boat to get up to temp. Have heard that short cycling tends to coke them up. Now run again for 3 years and touch wood[or MDF] still OK. What I did do was that if I start it I let it run for about an hour to ensure its blasted through and up to temp.
  13. I do know that earlier laser printers would draw several times their rated power in the first instance when starting. They were fitted with slow blow fuses to compensate. It is only milliseconds but may well be enough time to trip the inverter. Maybe someone up to date on newer kit can shed some light.
  14. Sounds fair. Does that mean all them pencil boats will get off the broad beam canals? fat bloke on a fat boat! HeHe
  15. General towpath permit has no width regulation. Only London? Had one of these last year and a few boats were already squatting on the VM when I got to where I wanted to be. When I left in Spring they were still there! No enforcement. Everyone I know who bought one felt a complete Prat as the CM's in the area did what they always do. TTP! Probably won't bother unless CaRT can guarantee enforcement will take place! No ice to speak of. Let the tirade begin!?
  16. Where are you in u.k? Can show you what worked for me. I'm on k&a. Simple is normally the best.
  17. Rule of thumb. Short cable run [sub 30ft] 4mm cable. Longer runs use 6mm. watts[power] is volts X amps. As volts go up, amps goes down. To professors of pedantics. Carry on as I am sure you can over complicate even this. Sorry Alan. Not aimed at you. [the pop comment]. Your observations are spot on.
  18. Bit like a house. You try to sell for one price. Buyer has survey done. The valuation is different. Dropped. You negotiate. If your surveyor said boat was worth 10 grand more than the asking price would you offer the difference up? Different surveyors will give different faults and values.
  19. AB Tuckey. They do it all the time. They are insured. Moved my W/B from Newark to Reading about 6 years ago. Just over 1K including lift and drop. They seem to get a good rate for cranage Professionals cost a bit more but peace of mind is worthwhile. If narrow just CC it down.
  20. Try putting can up on taff or somewhere stable. Put hose in can & tank then put hand in fist shape over can top and just blow into can. Was shown this years ago. Seems to work ok for me & i'm a 30 a day ashmatic :-] Bring me a full can round & I can demonstrate!

  22. If you are 24V then your 2 leisure's are in series[assuming 12V units]. Therefore you will need to increase your Bank in Pairs. Can't just add an extra 1. The Gibbon that wired my boat did that and that was a right laugh!
  23. Hi. Look at your washer /dryer wattage and then size inverter. Personally at least +50%.Better double. So if washer unit is 1500 watts look at 2250 - 3000 w inverter. Because if you size exactly with washer requirement the unit will 1/ probably trip on start up & 2/ not be able to use anything else whilst washer is running. Aren't travel powers just an alternator and inverter? [Not the generator ones] Dinz /'^'\ ( o o ) =============oOOO===(_)===OOOo=============== Dave McKenzie, Hunters Moon K&A. 24. Just consider extra weight when creating your cover. So shallow on the K&A at the moment that I ended up taking out 2 tons of ballast just to keep moving. More weight puts her deeper in the water. Quite a few around here with tiller bar through a 'letter box' slot. Then put brush plate top and bottom as you see on letterboxes and that stops vermin/flies etc. as well as working as a draught stop. Dinz Hunters Moon K&A
