  1. Thanks got some high zinc weld through type stuf today. I also plan to drill a hole in each plate to let the air escape while the grease is going in. I dont know what size the plates will be yet. Its a springer hull with formed plates so I am getting a quote from a ship builder with a large plate bender.
  2. Hi Does anyone know of a good coating to go between overplating? I have a large tin of red oxide but I was thinking that a zinc primer would be a better choice. Regards
  3. What kind of hoops will I have to jump through to stay on the bridge water canal for three weeks? Are there any marinas on the Bridgewater that offer short term moorings? I notice that Castlefield basin is full of long term moorings, could I get a spot there for a few weeks?
  4. How about going into a lock and filling it with potassium chloride, hanging a big sheet of zinc over the side. Hook it up to a battery changer and watch as you boat gets plated?
  5. My boat is supposed to have a 50 gallon tank (230 liters) I have not measured it though. Shower every day. It lasts about two weeks on my own without being too frugal. No washing machine either. When I'm out cruising I take a couple of 20 liter drums with me too so that I don't have to find a water point so often. Plenty of water points on most of the canals, don't worry too much.
  6. The Marina at Etruria is under new management and they have already done a bit to tidy the place up.
  7. That definition of reality only works if you believe in a situation where everything must be defined in terms of each single thing being relative to every other thing. Including the things which cannot be defined as things but for the purposes of effective communication I have referred to them as things too. Reality could also be an absolute constant but my guess is that such a thing would be hard to define. EDIT: to make is less wordy

  9. They could if they get a waste transfer license. More F**!£"$!N paperwork!
  10. The price of waste oil goes up und down. often it costs money to take away in small quantities. Scrap batteries have a pretty stable price but the cost of processing them again means you need large quantities. It would also require a covered double bunded storage area full of risk assessments, method statements and trained persons to handle the scrap. Scrap yards are the place for scrap batteries but remember to bring photographic I.D (ring first for a price, you wont get much for just one) Your local tip will have an oil disposal and a battery collection or your local industrial oil suppliers will take it from you.
  11. Hello Does anyone have some advice / tips for someone who would like to develop a career on the inland water ways? I am 24 years old, I have 7 years experience as a mobile heavy plant mechanic, I am a boater too and I have some experience working alongside the Manchester Ship Canal. I plan to study for a HNC correspondence course in Small Craft Surveying, I also have an NVQ3 in plant maintenance and a certificate in handling refrigerants. Currently looking for work. What kind of jobs are out there on the inland water ways? What courses/qualifications would help me to get them? Anywhere I can gain experience? (may work for free) I would love to hear about the experiences from people already working in the inland marine industry. Regards
