  1. I've never been able to understand people doing this sort of thing I know it happens to trains as well. Vandalism is the same. Why? You can almost understand theft (although i'd still string them up) as you get some sort of financial gain but with vandalism etc. all you get is the risk of being caught although perhaps thats the reasoning. Remind me is keel hauling still legal if you don't get caught doing it?
  2. The breather ideas makes perfect sense. Thanks for the replies/info.
  3. Ok so this is probably a daft question and I perhaps should know the answer but I have noticed on the stern of most Narrow Boats one of the mooring posts (can't think of the correct terminology) is slightly different from the other in that there appears to be some of nut head or special fitting on top. I just wondered what they are for?
  4. The weed cutting boat is currently moored at the Whitsunday Pie approach facing the West Stockwith direction so looks like the cutting continues.
  5. It is gin clear in most places however the weed in the areas I have been (although that isn't that much of it) doesn't seem to be that bad. From lady bridge to the Hop Pole is very clear and no real quantity of weed. I was helping on the trip boat last week and we did Hop Pole to Clarborough and Return with a turn near the town lock and the weed hatch revealed one large blade of grass and that was it.

    Towing

It still sounds like the trailer isn't suitable. Take a look at tyres as well. If it's a boat yard trailer chances are it will say something like "Not suitable for road use" on the tyres. If that's the case and you have an accident then ignoring the wait your insurance will run a mile!
  7. Evening all. I have just done my first trip as crew with the Chesterfield Canal Trust on the Seth Ellis. I was made to feel very welcome and really enjoyed it. Thanks for the advice on the forum and hopefully there will be more trips to come!
  8. I worked in a Petrol station for a while. It's amazig what people will try and use to carry petrol everything from a pop bottle to bucket. It does make you worry!

Most Land Rovers are 3.5t max unless you fit air brakes in which case it becomes 4.5t Edited because my fingers weren't following by brain!

    Towing

As people have said anything over 750kg gross weight is a big no. I pushed it once or twice towing with an Range Rover/ Landy but even that was pushing it. Not worth the risk!
  11. Just a thought for you. Can you remove part of the battery bank or add extra batteries? If so could they be charged at work or elsewhere? The idea only came about as I used to run a pub. We had a regular who lived on a boat for a while while his house was being renovated. He used to drop them off one evening and collect them the next. Often bought a pint or the odd meal and didn't happen every day but in winter it meant charged batteries and no petrol for the generator. May not suit but just an idea.
  12. If you look at you can see her current position etc. http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/details/ships/235065014/vessel:HUMBER_PRINCESS looks like she is near the Humber Bridge as present.
  13. I have hired on the Broads before. Generally people either go North or South Side. If they are newbies then North may be bettter as it's generally less tidal meaning there is less to worry about in terms of mooring rope lengths. Richardsons have a good range of hire craft. They are based in the North at Acle and Stalham but you can cross Breydon however this has to be done at certain times due to tides and always keep and eye out for the markers if you don't then you will run aground.
  14. Just what I was looking for. Thanks for the information.
  15. I'm trying to find a tide table that covers Cromwell Lock. I've had a look at Google but can't see anything obvious (probably me being stupid) has anyone got a link I can use.
  16. Hi Cheshire-rose, thanks for the info i've sent them an e-mail so watch this space
  17. I always thought the most important thing would be to ensure the drinks cabinet was well stocked!
  18. Thanks for the information and the message. The Chesterfield Canal Trust is my next step.
  19. Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place for this post so if needs moving then please do so. I live in Retford about 5 minutes walk from the Chesterfield Canal. Unfortunately I have no chance of affording a boat (although i'd love one) but have hire them for holidays and a friend used to have on small cruiser on the Stainforth Canal so I do have some very limited experience. The reason for this post is two fold. Firstly I have just taken the role of fishing bailiff on the Stretch from West Retford Bridge to Clayworth. With this in mind if anyone experiences any issues with anglers in that area please send me a message. I appreciate that boaters and anglers don't always get one but as someone who enjoys both sides i've always thought that a little mutual respect and consideration is in everyone's benefit. I have had experience of very considerate boaters and some that were deliberately inconsiderate and also the same with anglers. The Second reason for the post is that if anyone is going through the area especially from Whitsunday pie lock to the West Retford lock and wants a hand or some local knowledge then please get in touch. I'll always help if I can. Sound a bit sad but I love being around the water and boats.
