  1. Most of the people in here think that the canals are shit so I wouldn't if I were you.
  2. In respect of fishing the EA are a statutory regulator over all course fishing and use their rod licence income to fulfil their statutory obligations. Giving a proportion to all private fishery owners like CRT will significantly reduce that income and therefore diminish the service they provide. In any case fishing will not solve the funding problem if the Government contract is not renewed.
  3. But why? CRT and other fisheries owners get a market price for their property rights. And if CRT get a proportion of the rod licence income then so should every other fishery owner. What proportion would you suggest?
  4. You're not comparing like for like. The EA are the rod licencing authority so can charge every coarse fisher. CRT own property related fishing rights for a very small proportion of fishing areas.
  5. I recommend you offer your services as a consultant to the National Trust to ensure their successful takeover of CRT's waterways.
  6. As I understand it the National Trust will not take on any property or other responsibility unless they know they have the funds to care for it properly. So without continued taxpayer support why would they? The same goes for any successor to CRT should they be sacked or hand in the keys. As for fishing that won't make a jot if difference to the funding problem
  7. You really should think these things through before posting. If a boat stays on CRT waters it will incur a full charge under your system. What section or sections it uses is about distribution not total take The truth is without taxpayer support the CRT Waterways are doomed
  8. So would you care to explain how your 'filter' would work? The online mooring point is a completely different matter.
  9. Are you being serious or have I missed something?
  10. I think CRT are absolutely right to to emphasise their rôle in this. If they don't persuade Government to renew their grant at current real value levels then the first people who will suffer will be boaters. Running a linear environmental park is a damn site cheaper than facilitating a 2000 mile navigation system for 35,000 boats.
  11. It's Of course it's an impedement unless the law itself is changed and why would the Government do that? Do you really think given all the problems facing this country that changing the law to allow charges for towpath use of canals is a priority? You are delusional.
  12. I doubt anyone will get a vote on this.
  13. I can't help thinking that this appointment is tied up with the DEFRA grant review. Trying to demonstrate to Government that they are doing all they can to raise their own charitable income. I think it is still the case that they spend more on fundraising than they earn which has been the case since day one. Looks like that deficit has just increased a bit.
  14. BBC Look North has just reported that the West Yorkshire Combined Authority has shelved indefinitely the £3 million scheme to create an inland port in Leeds. This just as CRT is spending circa £500K on dredging the Aire & Calder to enable freight vessel movement to Leeds.
  15. Possibly. DEFRA will consider it a 'good thing' but the fact it's money from an alternative source could suggest to them that they don't need to pay for towpath improvements/maintenance. And believe me DEFRA are much keener on use of towpaths than boating.
