  1. I'm sure your departed parents are looking on. These stories really make me appreciate my own parents, so thank you. I shall tell them I love them today. That is a lovely boat. The extra width makes a huge difference to a narrowboat. My brother intends to keep his floor clear and undivided for that reason.
  2. This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 10 posts to view.
  3. Do any of you know what this stove might be? It doesn't seem to have any lettering on it. There isn't choice, it was free and that makes it the right stove. It seems to be fairly unused and the rust is mainly surface stuff. Just mucky from a shed that's all. Very happy with this.
  4. Lovely links folks. I shall be gleaning ideas too.
  5. Just ordered this on ebay Fireangel WCO-628 Wi-Safe Remote Carbon Monoxide Poisonous Digital Gas Alarm So thank you all for making us safer
  6. I saw discounts but not free. I will look for you. I need to know about tenders too. This mentions it http://www.britishwaterways.co.uk/media/documents/meetings/wusig/Boating_Issues_Meeting_Historic_Discount_Progress_March_2007.pdf I'll keep looking Found a form. No idea if it is new http://canalrivertrust.org.uk/media/library/732.pdf Yours may be too young but no harm asking. This is off that form. The basic structure of the boat should have been built before 1 January 1948 (when most inland waterways were nationalised). In some circumstances boats built after this date can be considered for the discount. There are many publications which illustrate or describe most of the older boats still existent. Applicants should provide documentary or photographic evidence of the boat’s age and history. The materials and methods of construction are often indicative of the period of manufacture, e.g. virtually all riveted iron/steel construction occurred before 1948.
  7. I've asked the vendor to look out for one. Thanks for the info.. and if anyone happens to spot one.....
  8. Just because I happen to be in love with them at the moment. Orange lights last 5.5 hours in a water bowl. I timed one last night. pic upload
  9. This isn't a techno solution nor one that will do anything other than create an ambiance and doesn't flog the horse. I suggest you eat some oranges/tangerines/mandarines and make oil lights with them, and/or buy some candles, and/or oil lamps. (Obviously with all the safety aspects adhered to). You don't need the lights on at all if you are on computers and you don't have to be in the dark without electricity. It can be most beautiful without. Folks managed for years without it. Keep the power for the techno machines and the beauty for yourself. P.S. using orange lights, put them in a bowl of water, then they don't burn up at the end.
  10. I think that is beautiful but i also think it is cold....
  11. Apparently it was 6 degrees this morning but now is 21 inside with a blanket hung halfway down. The water is 4 and outside was 2. Hot water bottles are handy.
  12. Will certainly get one. In fact I shall right now on the pute. There is certainly ventilation enough not to worry about fumes I hope and I think I read somewhere that as long as a paraffin heater burns with a blue flame and with enough oxygen, that the fumes were near zero. We haven't left the marina yet. Early days. There isn't even a floor to fix the heater to yet.... lol.
  13. Thank you. That was it.... I will ask. That first pic by PaulJ is where mine came from. He may have one.
  14. You all make me so happy saying how warm it is because I'm always worrying about my brother when it's freezing. I must say I was surprised how little heating boats seem to need to stay warm. His seems quite warm even with just an aladdin paraffin stove going. I'm not sure how super the fumes are from those long term. We're not fitted with anything to monitor that yet. I think it is unfinished enough not to be worried about getting any fresh air... lol.
  15. The chaps remounting the engine said that for a Petter AV2 marine engine there was a long handled starter thingy that stopped the persons hands hitting the floor and made it possible to stand up whilst starting the engine. I should have written it down and of course have forgotten what he said it was. Does anyone know what this 'thingy' is really called so I can look for one. This one has an electric start so it isn't strictly necessary, but a nice thing to keep an eye open for if we knew what it was meant to look like. Any ideas or a picture would be welcomed.
  16. There is someone up there looking after us.... we were given a stove today for gratis. It needs a bit of a brush up to shed the rust but it looks good. That makes up for all of this. I will try and load a pic.
  17. Wow.... I would never have guessed in a million years that there was so much to all this propellor malarkey. Thank you for that suggestion, however the gears of motion are all set in position now and a l/h prop is already coming to the marina fellows via the person who originally supplied the r/h one and all the stern gear. I have told the marina guys that there is another engine the same and they are very knowledgeable about Petters so they could easily decide to do that. I will re-mention it in case. This monty python episode will come to an end soon. The true joy is that the engine is a real dream in the most immaculate working order. My brother is really delighted with it and this prop problem will be a distant memory halfway through next week.... I hope.... I can't tell you how lovely it has been to find this forum and to know how many experienced boaty people really find the time to care for newbs, however daft the question. A big thank you to you all.
  18. Well we may just have to stomach the cost this time. It is blooming cold. The boat has to be out of the marina very soon. We are already over our original agreement of the 6th and can only stay because we are now customers. Happily though, the licence plates came today so the boat is free to roam now. Happy days.
  19. I will certainly mention it to my brother so he can have a look at that method. Thank you.
  20. Bloomin good idea for a new thread..... the prop swap! Thank you Claudia, but the marina have it arranged now. All is well.
  21. I only meant it flippantly. I will go off and check the shaft diameter. Thank you for that offer. I will check with the marina peeps and may be back for that. I had no idea that there was such a learning curve to have about what I thought was a simple prop.......!
  22. I don't think these boys are in the rip off game. They are real boatys. If they can restore their own to such beauty then I trust them implicitly. The prop is a 17" with a 12" pitch. I'm not sure if the shaft is 1.25" or 1.5". I am checking that now. I shall ask what the taper is too. I don't know that.
