  2. Sorry previous post "got away". I am almost certain this is at SP443650 from the orientation of the, now dismantled, railway line, the shadows on the aerial photo and the ladder bridge (no longer in situ) leading to the footpath to Broadwell. Also the Nelson Club is at the South East end of Stockton Village, i.e. nearest to the works.

  4. Just to avoid confusion, marine insurance, for hull and machinery, is on an agreed value basis. If your boat is a total loss you get the sum insured on the policy. The only exception is fraud, e.g. where you paid £5k for the boat but told the insurer you paid £30k and insured it for that. Most specialist marine underwriters have a feel for overvalued boats and would raise questions before agreeing to issue the policy because of the agreed value basis.

  7. I sold our previous boat through a broker. He required to see the bill of sale for the original purchase of the boat and then checked the validity with the broker who had acted for the vendor.

  9. I got an extra key from Peachment after finding that nobody has the right blanks. I seem to remember that Peachment had a minimum order limit.

  13. I agree! Thanks for all the helpful comments.
  14. We were planning next year to visit friends who have moved to Pocklington. I have not been able to check our Nicholson's which is on the boat. However CanalPlan shows a 55ft limit for River Derwent and Pocklington Canal. Our boat is 57ft + fenders. Does anybody know if the relevant locks are wide enough to allow a diagonal squeeze?
  15. If the driver is traced, but uninsured, the cost of repairing damage to roadside property is met by the Motor Insurers Bureau agreement in the same way as personal injury claims. I mention this as I have come across quite a few organisation including highway authorities who just drop the claim if the driver is uninsured.

  18. Both Craftinsure and Collidge & Partners place their cover with the same insurer i.e. Navigators and General (a trading name of Zurich Group). Factors to consider: Extent of cover.(Although using the same insurer they may be using different policy wordings.) Customer Service. Claims. (same insurer, so only relevant if policy wording varies) Premium. (including any charge for instalment payment, or fees/"policy charge")

  20. I am sorry to see this issue generating so much heat. We came through Bosley both ways last month. Helpful volunteers (not just on the top lock) who, I hope, are not going to be put off by some of the postings. The local CART employee was usefully employed tracing and repairing a leak on one of the middle locks. Possibly I have had luck, but the volunteers I have met have been a lot more helpful than a few of my fellow boaters, including one who had no idea that, for a single boat ascending a double lock you raise the nearside paddle first.
  21. Thanks for the replies. I thought it could be Kings Bromley but I was a bit thrown by the reference to Bromley Common lock.
  22. I have just re-read the book. In describing his trip from Fradley, Rolt writes about the smell coming from a milk processing plant which he notices at Shade House and Wood End locks and discovers the plant after passing through "Bromley Common Lock". Anybody got any ideas?
  23. Passing through Atherstone 28th June we were approached by a boater who had had his boat thrashed overnight. We were in the middle of a mighty thunderstorm but I got the impression that the boat had been moored in the old coal yard on the offside at the top lock and all brass, pipes and cables had been taken. Sounds as if Atherstone is reverting to it's old reputation. I seem to remember that, after the last bout of problems a few years ago, some CCTV cameras were fitted. Does anybody know if they are still there and working/monitored?
