  1. I've always assumed that a 12v fridge is the no brainer option. However reading some of the figures quoted on here that may not be the case. I think the curve ball is that we need the inverter to power the diesel range which is providing our cooking, hot water and heating.
  2. You'd have to explain those figures in more detail. Are they per day? What's AES mode? What's search mode?
  3. So there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer then.
  4. We have a 30ft butty and it needs its own license, insurance, mooring and boat safety certificate. No discount either. It's insured with the same company I use for our motor so they are aware of its use.
  5. We have a diesel fired Heritage range so the inverter needs to be on to power that. I'd guess 1-2 hours in the morning and perhaps 4hrs in the evening during winter, less in summer obviously. However that still means the inverter can be switched off for most of the day.
  6. So in simple terms a 12v fridge is going to use less power per day than a 240v fridge plus inverter? The replacement 12v fridge we were considering is a Waeco CRX140.
  7. Inverter is a Victron multi plus inverter charger. 12v/3000/120amp The fridge is a liebherr expensive to replace and expensive to repair, if you can find a service centre that will repair a liebherr fridge. I appreciate that 12v fridges are equally expensive but I'm trying to work out if it would save me power in the long term by being able to switch the inverter off for part of the day.
  8. Approximately what would a 3kw inverter draw from the batteries when switched on. The reason I ask is because our 240v fridge is on the blink and as we're living off grid I'm wondering if it's worth forking out on 12v fridge to save on power.
  9. We had a similar weed hatch on a cruiser stern boat we owned a few years ago. If I'd left that behind we'd defo have been in trouble.
  10. I've found these at screwfix. If I've understood correctly they will do the job. http://www.screwfix.com/p/british-general-13a-rcd-fused-spur-metal-clad/4323p
  11. Just a thought on this. Would wiring it in this way be a BSS fail as it's not going through the consumer unit?
  12. We've only owned it a few months, it's currently being converted into a workshop for my wife. We've found a few photos online so I'll add these to our collection.
  13. We are off grid so will be relying on generator power and the inverter when only lighting is required. I'll be fitting a single solar panel at some point. on the subject of an RCD would it be wiser to fit a garage consumer unit with 2 MCB's and an RCD? I have a generator only lead with bonded N & E.
  14. The charger was fitted before we bought the butty and has a 3 pin plug. My idea was to fit a socket and switch it on when using the generator. It hasn't crossed my mind to wire it before the change over switch.
  15. We have a 30ft butty towed behind a 62ft motor. I use short cross straps and get them nice and tight. The tiller is tied straight with rope and she follows really well.
  16. I'm currently converting a 30ft butty into a workshop for my wife to use as a stained glass studio. I'll be installing a shoreline inlet for use with a generator. This will power a battery charger and some sockets. There's also an inverter already fitted along with the charger which is fed from two 100ah batteries. Here's the wiring diagram I intend to install. Can the clever folks on here tell me if it's correct please.
  17. We had literally 1000s of CDs. I sold them all on eBay and music magpie after downloading them all onto our Mac. All my listening is now via laptop,iPad, iPhone through a rechargeable Bose sound dock. my wife is an avid reader and all her books we also sold and donated apart from a few cherished ones. She uses a kindle or buys 2nd hand books and donates them after they've been read.
  18. I'm about to fit 300W of solar panels and trying to decide between paying a premium for a Victron or buying a tracer. Our electrical system is Victron based. I fitted a tracer on our previous boat and had no problems with it. what do more knowledgeable people than I think? Also what's the difference between Tracers A series and B series?
  19. We have a SG and a Victron BMV 600 monitoring the batteries. The % reading on the BMV seems inaccurate so I use the SG % as a guide and then recharge until the BMV is showing a charge reading of below 10 amps or the charger has switched to float. we liveaboard and over time I've come to know how the batteries behave on a daily basis.
  20. As an owner of classic cars for many years I can guarantee that what appears to be a small rust spot will be much worse once you start investigations.
  21. If I was a betting man I'd wager on the rust returning within 3 years.
