  1. It’s quite difficult to get in to see properly. From the landlady’s memory the stables collapsed in the 80’s. She reckons all the materials to rebuild are in there. Roof tiles and bricks. (Obviously new wood will be needed.) The footings and base are still there, I’m told. I’ll ask to see some old photos and I’ll have another look when the weather cools later and see if I can get some better photos. But it’s all so overgrown it’s hard to tell, you’d have to get a strimmer in there for a day or two to clear it out There is now a fence which cuts off the section where the stables were. I believe they date back to 1840’s ?? from the photos above; the entrance to the stables will have been off the towpath, not the lane or pub side. I must ask this evening when the pub opens. The landlady has spoke of wanting to rebuild them.

  4. But...one only has fenders down when moored, so no need to run the gunnel but run down the bank .. but be careful not to trip on your 4 lines or 8 lines and how many pins ? 16? 😉

  9. I was simply interested to find why/how people do things differently. Haggis explained clearly how it’s either too difficult or unsafe to reach the T stud, and they prefer to have additional easy to get to studs and cleats. Simple but I’d not thought about it from that angle before. And others find chafing unbearable. But I’m still a little confused with your requirement for extra fastenings. But no matter.
  10. Arr well in that case, I just suffer a bit of chafing and run a long line forwards from the stern dolly. If I weren’t lazy I would put a bit of cloth or something to stop the chaffing for I don’t think Vaseline would help with that sort of chaffing. I hadn’t noticed 😉

  12. Are you referring to the point below the writing ‘ship and boat’? If so, ain’t that where a shackle would be to catch the butty? Right that makes sense, So that ‘hook’ instead of a second dolly, would that be how you catch or snatch the butty?
  13. Ain’t they the hooks for when the butty and motor come together? so they can snatch a line or something like that.
  14. That’s a shame. What was story behind the boat? Any idea why it’s gone. It must have been successful for awhile? Or was it simply an experiment or project that proved unviable?
  15. Yes, and all boats are different. My boat has little freeboard so often the lines are not running down from a great height, I think that can be a benefit. But usually I’ll just tie up with one line from the front and one from the back and don’t mind a little movement, it’s quite nice. If the boat is gonna bang about I find 1 extra line is usually enough to keep the boat in. But I totally get it now though 👍 that for some it’s safer not to have to lean out or step up high but be able tie to something easier to reach, so an extra T stud or cleat is dead handy.
  16. If you have a crew you won’t be aware of the peculiarities for the single hander. I would expect (hope) there’ll be many more times, now that you have you own boat that you will single hand. You’ll find you’ve a few days free when no one else has and it’d be too good an opportunity to miss. The trip hazard won’t be a hazard for you anyway, you know it’s there and will take care. Of course it’s all compromise and trade offs, but I manage fine with the one T stud on the bow and 2 dollies on the stern.
  17. Ok. That makes sense. So in your case it’s more about the ease of mooring up, and making it safer for you 👍 What I’m thinking is an extra line can be taken from the same T stud to an extra peg or goat chain, nappy pin etc to create the extra spring line.
  18. Didnt that hydrogen boat have its own private mooring ? If so, is the mooring still there? and can we now use it?
  19. There’ll come a point when you’ll boat alone and will use the gunnels. There are plenty of places where you can’t moor at a lock landing and have to put the bow at the gates and walk down the gunnels, or places where you can’t get the stern in to the bank without getting the bow in first. Swing bridges, lift bridges and lots of other places where as a single hander you’ll need to walk the gunnels.
  20. I’m a bit confused with the need for extra mooring points. I can see a possible advantage when tying to bollards. But if tying to Armco or putting pegs in the bank then the T stud and dollies are enough?
  21. I’m presuming the OP wants to leave their boat unattended for 14days in Brum for free.

  24. Does Sherborne Wharf still offer moorings? You could pay your pound instead of dumping a boat and denying a visitor space for the games. 🤷‍♀️just an idea.
