  2. No it's illegal to run this on an open road. (without the engine cover)
  3. The engine works well without boost. Its just a remapping problem
  4. Subaru's new flat 4 long stroke diesel engine would be very good for boats. The power limitation in the car is due to cooling ie it would need much bigger radiators which is not a problem on a boat. The removal of the turbo so to normally aspirate, would yield sufficient power for narrow and broad-beam boats but would require a 2:1 reduction before the gearbox to get the prop speed right.
  5. Ford produced a 4 cylinder engine with a balance shaft, it was a vee 4.
  6. Life is not difficult. A three cylinder engine has balance. A four needs a counterbalance shaft. The quality of all 'a' and 'b' series engine need to be reflected upon. How many basic Ford engines have all of you seen on narrow boats? They are not marine engines and cannot be relied upon to take on what some of our members wish to do. A machine needs to be fully reliable and cost effective. Something slammed together without any quality control will not last the job. How many times over the last ten years have we read about duff engines with blown head gaskets and vibration, This does not count the ancillary problems as well. Smoking, who need it. Low duty cycles wreck all engines. We are experts at that. Hope this helps.

  8. Tosh, they were very badly made engines by people who went down the pub as soon as they could. If you buy a boat with an A series engine, be prepared to spend some money on it.
  9. I suppose Dunromin would also not be a good name for a boat
  10. Native bird of Alabama is the mozzie.
  11. I agree with Allan Jones. Unfortunately I had a butty on a shot tow and it was not properly ballasted so going through one bridge hole, caught the canvas cover corner on the butty. That's two things to remember, right tow length and proper ballasting.

  13. I think that with an actual increase in VAT of 2.1% the boat size is now critically expensive. You have to build to the VAT rules or pay a lot more. Not a good idea as all boats of that type will look the same.
  14. Perhaps they should plant more trees so we don't have to look at those ugly windows.
  15. I find it very difficult to come to terms with anyone who abuses animals. I really cannot take it. Stuff his head down his weed hatch.o

I shall send Steve a copy. Many thanks!
  17. Simples, just fill the reactor with some water and start pulling the rods out.....no not those rods, they are the fuel! Shutting it down is something else.

Thanks Steve. I was talking to Steve Cooper about his old boat and decided to find out about it and if it was still around. Steve does deep water sailing nowadays.
  20. Most of this is bullshit because of the placing of the weed hatch and its design. The sizing of the prop is or should be determined by the sfc of the engine in normal use. If however you spend a large mixture of time on rivers, then the torque band of the engine and its brake horse power must also be considered. All of the calculations give power absorption in relatively deep water and do not take into account the actual boat designers preference to his swim. This is a very ongoing question. Due to circumstances, I am now available to be back on the site. Anyone who knew my wife, Ann James, should be aware that she died suddenly in March this year. Bless you all.
  21. Hello all you who can help. There was a 45/6 foot boat called Barbie, true spelling lost but named after the owner Barbera, joint owner. Circum built 1970 and sold on about 11 years ago, I am just trying to find some history for the old owning family. The original engine was a 3 cylinder Lister with a mechanical gearbox. I have no other information about this narrowboat. Any help would be great!

  23. You could use wooden curtain rings available everywhere.
  24. Some do use the same lenses but others like Canon do not. It depends on how far back you go. Nikon are OK and Canon EOS but not pre. I am not sure of other makes but I do know that there are adapters made for all. In most case the camera has to be used in a manual or semi manual mode. You should also check the camera sensor size. If it is 0.6 of a 35mm then the standard lens will be different. That means that old 35 mm lenses are effectively 'larger' that they were.
