Sounds like a good decision.
I have also been planning this for a while and my conclusions were:
Thought about having a boat built, but it would REALLY pushed me financially, I don't have the experience to plan it properly so would be depending on the builder for advice and designs. I would probably start re-arranging the brand new boat as soon as I took delivery and probably be constantly realising how things might be better.
Thought about a sailaway but found it very difficult to assess what the costs would be to fit it out as I went along. Also realised that I would be living in a workshop for possibly a very long time!!!
Spend the rest of my life looking for the perfect boat, not very realistic !!!
Decided that I have pretty good skills with woodwork, plumbing, heating, electrics, maintenance, was trained as a mechanic and have good IT skills. But accepted that I do not have any real skills with heavy metal working, welding etc.
So it seemed to make sense to try and find a boat with a good hull, which I would rely on a surveyor to confirm, but was 'tired' and in need of TLC !
I suspect there are quite a few about, it's just finding them !!!
My initial 'boat requirement' list went in the bin a long time ago, mainly when I realised the boat would be in the hundreds of tons and longer and wider than an Olympic swimming pool
So now the requirement list is quite short. An 'interesting' hull, an 'interesting' engine, not bothered about the toilet system as I believe I will be able to learn to live with, or change it if necessary and I will be able to play with someone else's innards that have hopefully been designed with more experience than I have !
It seems to be harder on the feet, but easier on the brain
Good luck with your search
