I, like many people it seems, consider life jackets to be a little OTT for canals and wouldn't be seen dead in one, for fear of being ridiculed.
That is until I had the fortune to find a very slim, dark blue one that a hirer had bought, but not used. Worn under a jumper it hardly shows, under a coat invisible.
I now feel a bit safer, and a bit warmer.
And no-one can see it...
Honestly, it's not witchcraft, it's just a length of 8mm rod bent to the right angles to support its own weight, and the more weight you put on it, the stronger it becomes, if you see what I mean?
On a serious side, in this weather, I have a sort of slidey affair thingy that I can push up or down my chimney, great for warming towels / cooking / drying things, etc.
I have been reading this forum for quite a while, without signing up, to hear what other boaters have to say on a lot of various topics.
Coming from a beautiful town, of which the town centre has been blighted by a rash of fleurescent (sp?) signs, I really don't want the same for our canals.
Yes, signs can help, but can go too far in their dominance of an otherwise beautiful scene.
Fair enough at a staircase or otherwise unusual lock, but an ordinary lock, because it happens to be near a hire base, then no.
Besides which, I believe that most hirers (about 60 per cent?) are not first time hirers, and therefore don't actually need them?
I'm open to be corrected on that stat.
Reputable hire bases give their customers good tuition in using locks with videos and models etc, surely this is adequate?
I don't think the idea of them having to put them up would go down very well.
Also, being a bit of a traditionalist, I prefer as little "lock furniture" as possible. Where would it lead to, signs proclaiming "This advisory board is sponsored by xxxxx boatyard" with adverts on it? No thankyou.
