  2. Ha ha ....I have pictures of my sister standing in the middle of the Avon at Stratford near 'The Rec' with my parents, surrouded by alot of other people in '63. I heard that someone drove a Land Rover along The Avon from Stratford to Evesham that winter ( came onto land at Weirs and locks of course ! ), Folklore ? I think the ice was thick enough ......
  3. Incredible ! I do recall many years ago that it was really very silted in Bancroft Basin and the approach section , and the system was drained for major dredging, but i am talking 30 years ago. Having seen the Basin recently, it is much improved from say, just Ten years ago. (I used to go 'sliding' on the ice of the basin in the cruel winters of the late 70's whilst waiting for the school bus.Madness now i think of it.) Incidentally, did you know that the original basin was about 60 yards further up towards the Theatre ? The current basin is i believe about 110 yrs old ............When it is very dry, you can see the greener grass 'outline' where the old basin lay. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, ok , enough ...........
  4. Lock ins ? Well that takes me back , but I thought there was no need for that following licensing reforms ? However, it was always a great feeling when the landlord, closed and bolted the doors , and kept serving ! Naughty ,but nice ! lol
  5. Thanks Steve , haven't been for quite a while, used to be something quite special many years ago. Last time i went, it was looking a little tired.
  6. Again , thanks for the replies and reassurances ESPECIALLY re; the Aquaducts ( Wondering if The Navigation Inn at Wooten Wawen is still a decent pub ). Debbi, the mooring is legit, not BW managed, privately managed, but NOT CHEAP! £2400 a year non residential. But not living in The UK, I do need somewhere secure and someone to keep an eye on the boat, so held to ransome really. It's going to be an expensive business that's for sure.
  7. Great answers there , and speedy repsonses ! Thanks very much. Now ... the aquaducts must be challenging though aren't they ?
  8. Hi I want to buy a boat to moor close to The Avon, well Stratford to be precise. Found a decent spot for possibe moorings on The Stratford Canal. My first choice of boat would be a wide beam, but considering flooding risks on The Avon, I have to be sensible and stay on canal moorings in a narrow boat. I have looked at a 6'10" beam boat that seems to be within price and spec etc . My question; given that Max beam on The Stratford Canal is 7' , is this really feasible ? It is too tight for comfort isn't it ? An inch either side ? That's not comfortable cruising is it ? I'd love for you all to say, no problem in a 6'10" beam. Would appreciate some feedback please. Cheers Ian

  12. Yes, It's a Met Police vehicle parked up, presumably on a red route or on double yellows outside a kebab shop ! WTF ?

  14. Ah, right ! Guide wheels on a double decker though ? Wonder why Brum got rid of them if they are so safe ? Having lived in Cambridge for a while, i can only say ' I'm not surprised' ! lol
  15. Good God , What the hell is that ? It looks dangerous and would cost a fortune in replacement wheels i would imagine ! Why does a Bus need to be on a guided track ? Don't they trust the drivers to be able to drive in a straightish line ?

  17. Is it just me ?I find reading ALL of this quite uncomfortable. I am genuinely sorry for this couple, if they have got into a situation where it would appear that they have lost money in good faith etc. But they have recourse through the courts, and appear to be actively gathering evidence. A forum is no place to be discussing such litigational issues. If you are engaged in 'litigation' your 'legal advisor'would i'm sure, suggest you desist from this practise and address your claim through 'normal' channels. If you have been genuinely wronged, i wish you the best , i really do, but to a Civil Recorder/ Judge, these on-line rantings will not go down well! Proceed through 'Judicial Channels' and nowhere else is my advice. Best of Luck.

  19. Society gets the Police service it deserves. We live in the times of a 'Second Generation' of 'Generation X' kids. Essentially, this refers to a generation that lack discipline in homes and schools, an overly selfish temperament and a deluded 'self belief' fueled by modern media that they are in some way ' A huge star waiting to be recognised ' ! Mix that with a liberal attitude to all things in society having to be measured against the beast that is the Human Rights Act, then you begin to see why some see the Police ' as having given up .........' Maybe some of them have . These factors have in essence destroyed the fabrics of British society.I would suppose that it is the antithesis to 'Thatchers Britain'. I wonder who History will Judge as being responsible for the best 'societal' model of The late 20th century ? Thatcher or Blair ? Why do I say that society gets the Police Service IT deserves ? Well, simply put, we all have a civic and moral duty as citizens to assist The Police, It is or should be a 'collective' responsibility to prevent and detect crime. Sadly many people don't think that any longer.Nu-Labour had 13 years to make changes to society and of course to The Police , they didn't do anything, except enact a record breaking number of Parliamentary Acts more than any previous Government. These achieved little........... If a police officer doesn't do what you expect he or she should do , make a complaint. If you call the police about a theft and then get your property back, but don't want to make a statement and are not willing to attend court, then i suggest you just 'swallow' your loss next time. Save the Police some time and effort, they are not Bailiffs!
  20. I have to agree with you .Just incredible work from a few , quite amazing really !
  21. Thanks for letting me know !!!!!! Thoroughly enjoyable !
  22. Indeed, that's the one, it was a 'Harvard' US NAVY Plane, but painted up in Japanese ' zero ' markings for some reason.
  23. What's WRONG with Gary Numan ? Saw him at Coventry Theatre on 'The Pleasure Principle' tour in 1979, and followed him since ( apart from the Early to late 90's when he was was indefencibly shite ), but he's done some great stuff in the last 10 years. And he's a boat owner !!!!!!

  25. Why do you think that is Richard ? Is it the 'financial costs ' or objections from landowners along the way ? At Charlecote Park for instance there is a boom across the River, quite difficult to negotiate even in a canoe. The proposed extension was being 'talked 'about 25 yrs ago, when I worked on The Avon.As you say, Shame !
