I'm sorry but those who say they would enter the water to help at all costs are fool hardy. I teach life saving to all sorts of people and we always teach that no matter who the casualty is, if it is not safe to get in the water then don't. We actively encourage those we teach not to enter the water unless really necessary and it is safe for them to do so.
I agree that all boats should carry safety equipment of some variety (life ring) and there is nothing to stop you from attempting a land based rescue, but jumping in after someone in flood water conditions only makes the situation worse:
- If you are not strong enough to deal with it (buoyancy aid or not) then you will end up a casualty too.
- Emergency services are then faced with the dilema of which person to rescue first, so actually you could be delaying help getting to the other person.
- A dead hero is no good to anyone!
