eberspacher dw5 blowing fuses

My Eberspacher DW5 is now 9 years old and has always been used very infrequently, some years, not at all, although I do try to fire it up once or twice a year to turn it over. However, it is now blowing fuses in the main fuse panel after about 15 seconds running. Any ideas? Chilly, daveyboy.

What size is the amps of the fuse?

If the voltage is low then the heater will pull more amps to the heater plug - try starting it with the engine running, this will increase the voltage

After about 15 seconds with the heater on the fuel pumps starts, the pump might be faulty - try disconecting it and see if the fuse still blows.

If you pull the black cover off of the pump you can then turn the impeller by hand it may have jammed due to lack of use.

 

I have a couple of these that I'm going to recondition and both were sold to me as working, by genuine people, and both had the covers loose, so I assume that removing the cover won't do any harm, I think it's there to protect the impeller, not to stop water leaking out.

 

I'm sure if this is incorrect some-one will be along to correct me.

If the volts are low, the heater plug current will be lower not higher. The heater can't "pull more amps" to compensate, the current is driven by the volts applied.

Had the same problem myself. If it's the 16 amp fuse take the glow plug out and clean it. The heater element is wraped arround a triangular insulator. You need to clean under the element, use a sewing needle or something similar and a tooth brush to get all the debris out. Worked for me!
