Protecting batteries from over discharge ?

Why / how would the batteries get over-discharged when you are away.

Personally, if I'm going to be away for a week or two the fridge & freezer are emptied and EVERYTHING turned off.

 

Our offshore cruiser was 'shut-down' early September when it was lifted out, it will most probably not be re-visited until May.

I expect the batteries to be still in pretty fair shape after 8 months 'sitting' and 'trickle charged' by solar.
