Stern Gland Identification

I have what appears to be an unusual stern gland on my narrowboat. When in the boat it has a tank attached which presumably should have some oil in it. I would like to strip it and replace bearings and seals but am reluctant before knowing a bit more about it. Can anyone help please.

Can't see too well from the photo but the outer bearing race seems too narrow to be a thrust surface. I suspect the bearing is a normal ball bearing designed to take radial loads only. Perhaps the other bearing is a thrust bearing?

I think you will need to strip it to find out what you have. Shouldn't be difficult - just remove the circlip and gently knock the shaft through from the other end.
