It was the other way round. Cunard wanted it named for the sovereign but Elizabeth named it Queen Elizabeth 2 which is why it has the number 2 on its bow and looks like a platform number.

Solid fuel stoves shouldn't introduce any fumes to a house! Because the room has to have an air vent, homes with solid fuel fires are actually healthier than homes with central heating. See http://solidfuel.co.uk/for this claim, presumably based on the fresh air introduced via the air bricks.

If I remember correctly, Stephen Fry said on an episode of QI that the ship was launched by the Queen, it was supposed to be named the QE2 but when the Queen launched it she said "I name this ship Queen Elizabeth the Second"

Everything I know I learnt from QI.

I think this is correct rather than mross' version. There does appear to be no absolute version of the origin of the name. Is it simply named after the first ship Queen Elizabeth (named after the hospital that was named after person, naturally) or directly named after the same person or after Queen Elizabeth II?

I always thought it quite telling that British & Commonwealth monarchs had the world's greatest liners named after them but the most recent Queen of the Netherlands had the Harwich to Hoek van Holland car ferry name during after her (Koningin Beatrix). They were properly proud of it too.
