Oil Change - Vetus 4.14 How much oil?

Featured Posts

Warmed the engine up, allowed time for it to drain, sucked the oil out with a Pela pump. Couldn't really tell how much came out. Removed the oil filter into a plastic bag with some kitchen roll in it.

Manual says 4.5l of oil, plus the filter.

Oiled the filter, and poured a bit in before fitting it. Then, having poured 3.5l in, and run the engine to fill the filter etc., the dipstick shows full.

I guess there's a strong chance the Pela doesn't get all the oil out, so there could easily have been a litre or so left in the bottom.

What's the best thing to do to get all the oil out - take it as a given that I can't get at the sump plug.

Should I change it again perhaps a bit sooner than usual?

Does it matter too much?

Many Thanks

Mine is a 415 Vetus so may be different, but I can usually get around 4l out using a similar pump. I don't think I ever get the last bit. I just live with it.

As said when it read right on the dipstick you're there, out of interest why the pela pump, doesn't the 4 series have a built in pump for removing the engine oil? My M3.10 does, I thought it was standard on Vetus engines.

I think that is only later ones. My 415 was supplied with a loose hand held brass pump, with a thin pipe that goes down the dipstick hole.

The boat came with a hand held brass pump like that - first time I used it it leaked black oil all over the place, so I dumped it and bought a trusty Pela.

Likewise! I did improve the brass pump by using different flexible hose though. I keep meaning to put a union on the drain plug, and a metal pipe, but like many things have never got around to it.
