I agree, LMS used maroon. Can't remember LNER being anything other than Black, Green or Blue!

The quoted date (1956) relates to a transitional period during the evolution of British Railways liveries. Shortly after 'Nationalisation' in 1948, a version of LMS Crimson Lake was adopted as an overall livery for secondary and suburban passenger coaches. A similar colour, in a slightly darker shade, along with a yellowish shade of cream was used as a corporate livery on buildings and vehicles - but not boats. A variation of this (often referred to as "Blood & Custard") was used for main line passenger coaches. After 1956, Maroon - a darker shade of Crimson Lake was adopted for all locomotive hauled passenger coaches albeit regional variations (dark green on the Southern Region and "Chocolate & Cream" on the Western Region) were permitted exceptions. The maroon livery was also applied to some locomotives and continued to be used until replaced by the 'new image' of the Circa 1965.

The LNER generally used 'varnished Teak" as a passeneger coach livery - even steel panels were beautifully 'grained' to resemble varnished teak . . .
