Overplating

Featured Posts

I dont follow some of the reasoning penned here. If you have a 25 year old boat with 6mm steel and pitting in places to 2mm you are left with 4mm plate. If you decide to overplate in 6mm and it is done professionally why shouldnt you get another 25 years service?

Narrowboats are normally massively strong compared to pretty much anything else that floats, it is not true that a boat that has been, or needs, some overplating is worn out. If overplating keeps the water out it is doing the job, if it is at all possible, cutting out and replating the bottom is a better way to go than just welding a big sheet of steel over the whole thing, but whatever you do keep it painted with epoxy, it will last for years, as for overplating the sides, perfectly ok.
