grannykins
We're hiring from Kate boats at Stockton from Mon to Fri next week (26th). Planning to go east on the Grand Union, up the Oxford and the Coventry. Dont know how far we'll get as the days are short, but hey, we're not really going anywhere so it doesnt matter. Does anyone know of any problems that way at all? Have looked and there doesnt appear to be any stoppages.
canalboater2012
Hope the boat you have hired has a solid fuel stove fitted!!!!!!
grannykins
Unfortunately not, just diesel heating. But only a 38ft so hopefully with plenty of layers and thermals shouldnt be too bad. We've done it in winter before, and not managed to get a boat with a stove yet. Hoping to be able to do that next time.

grannykins
Thanks, will look at them next year. Would really like to have one with a stove. We tend not to hire in summer now. As intended liveaboards (retirement 4 years and counting) we are just making sure we can still do it in winter. Plus out of season it is much more peaceful and not as many boats around. Feels more like the canal belongs to us
john6767
We were up that way a couple of weeks ago, our boat is moored at Calcutt. You are not going to have any problems. I presume there are still closures at Hillmorton, but they only close one side at a time, so it will be open throughout, and there will be few enough boats about. I would suggest that you aim for Hawksbury, and see how you are doing when you get there. You could go round to Marston Junction but that bit of the Coventry is not the most interesting in my opinion. If you can get away early enough try and get round the GU as far as bridge 103 where there are good moorings, that will give you a head start on day 2. Would like to get up the Ashby some way, but with the short days and conscious of having to have time to get back to base, probably wont get that far this time. grannykins
Just back from a lovely week! dont do internet very well with my phone, so unable to post till now. We decided to really slow down and just pootle along without worrying about actually getting anywhere, so we only got as far as Stretton before turning around. Looking at everyone elses boats and feeling very envious! It has been a really enjoyable few days. Apart from a few showers on Tuesday, we have been lucky with the weather too. Saw one or two other boats one the move, but only one other hire boat. Pulled over to let one pass, as we were just pootling. We were aboard Thomas David, from Kate Boats. At 38ft the smallest one we have been on, but big enough for the two of us for a few days. The gas central heating kept us cosy, and even this morning in the frost there was no problems starting her. Trouble is, it makes us want our own even more, and we definitely cant for another 4 yrs

If you won't be getting your own for four years - - just think of the wonderful assortment of hire boats you'll be able to use until then . . . . it'll give you an even better idea of what you really want when you buy one!
