Does anyone know where we could hire a boat so we could (easily) do the Sheffield and South Yorkshire canal in two weeks ?

I`ve done a few internet searches but can`t find any narrowboats for hire between Silsden and Sheffield. Sheffield Narrowboats do have a boat but it doesn`t often seem to be available.

Thanks in advance !

Try Shire Cruisers at Sowerby Bridge.

who have Sheffield as one of the destinations on their route suggestions.Canal Planner shows that a round trip Sowerby Bridge/Sheffield will take approx 11 days at 7 hrs/day so it is do-able but check because there have been restrictions and stoppages on the Tinsley Locks this year.

Cheers

We spotted an ad. for these guys when we last moored in Sprotbrough

Sprotbrough (in case you don't know) is on the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation which is possibly exactly what you are looking for.

I have no idea if they are any good, but the boats look very nice.

Thanks for that Howard. I have to say that Sowerby bridge to Sheffield would be about 150 lock miles e/w if I`ve worked it out right, which is about the same as from Skipton, Silsden`s slightly nearer. Particularly if hiring for 2 weeks we like to stop off and have a look round, so 300L/M in 2 weeks seems like hard work I asked Dave at Tinsley locks and he didn`t think they`d be needing a possession during the summer, which is when we`d be going.

We could be interested in that, though I`m a bit concerned they`ve only got a mobile phone number and "no formal address" I have to say !

Does it say one has a "vintage engine", does anyone know anything about that ? Is it a classic slow revver ?

Why not give the mobile number a ring and ask, I suspect that is the best course of action.

If you don't feel comfortable with the response then don't go with them.
