otto
Hello, Can anyone tell me the oil capacities for a BMC 3.8l 4 cyl. diesel engine. What is the correct oil to use? Can I use semi synthetic which is less prone to sludging. Regards Otto
bizzard
Oil sludging is usually the result of an engine running too cool.
otto
Exactly bizzard! thats why I want to use something that will reduce sludging. With river speeds at 6mph max I have to run at 900 to 1000 revs max. which I know is not good for the engine. So what is the best oil for this scenario. Its condensation mixed with carbon soot and stuff mixing with the oil that causes sludge due to running too cool and not under enough load. Most oils say on the can ''For reduced sludging blah blah blah. mmmm! I'd get in touch with an oil company telling them your problem, Morris's, Castrol, Comma ect. Smelly
I used a straight 30 in the 3.5. Fair to say it was under propped and running fast but it came out similar to when it went in, just blacker... I got 2 oil changes plus top ups from 25litres so in the region of 10 for the change I'd suggest.
otto
Thanks Smelly, I will go with a straight 30 and maybe look at reducing the pitch on my prop. I have a 19x20 on at the moment. By the way the boat is a 4.5 ton colvic northerner Kind regards otto
