1.5 with no air filter

As a newbie owner since end of September I have just discovered that my engine had no air filter/housing. A new filter and housing has been fitted now and it seems to be running quieter. Is there any reason why there wasnt one fitted in the first place. Is it sacrificial to have one fitted? What harm will it have caused if any and what benefits will one now have on the engine?

It is not uncommon for canal boats to have no air filter, the theory being that they draw clean air from the engine bay

But our cruiser stern draws dusty air through grilles at towpath level, or through the gaps full of grit around the deck boards

Don't worry about what damage it may have done, congratulate yourself on preventing damage in the future
