Rivet removal

Featured Posts

Simple question - I have been attempting to repair our old cratch cover. A number of the fasteners / poppers were broken and I have repalced the half on the material itself but I now need to replace three or four on the cabin side.

How do I remove - drill out?, what size drill bit.

Also what size / type of pop rivets do I refasten with or can I screw the replacements.

I can see a pop rivetter at screwfix but would appreciate some advice, this is a little out of area for me.

Thanks

John

John,

Maffi has posted the definative answer! The picture has saved many many words.

When you come to used the riveter, and you have not used one before, have a practice on some scrap metal. Some times you get the correct size drill bit with the rivets but, as an example: the large-ish 4.8mm pop rivets will need a 5mm drill.

Thanks for the replies - that has really helped and should give me the confidence to give it a go.

Have been a closet viewer for a while now but great to start postings.

This is our third boat having had two built from new, but this time round and now with a young family the budget was more restricted and so I am enjoying a long list of projects to keep me busy.

Thanks again

John
