I have a lovely large water colour painting of a Lancaster Canal scene painted by

Robert Hollands Walker who exhibited his work from 1893 to 1920. The wooden horse barge has Mary of Glasson painted on its stern and it is crewed by a man and woman.

Can any of you knowledgeable lot help identify further detail.Hills in the background suggest Forest of Bowland.

If it is too large for a scanner bed, or is in a frame which you do not want to remove the picture from, using a digital camera you can simply take a picture of the picture but do make sure any flash is not reflected in the glass, either by taking it a bit offset from dead centre, or using illumination from the side. A tripod is always the best bet for sure clarity of image. Then load it onto the computer via a cable or if your PC has card reading slots, remove the card from the camera and place it in the slot. You will then get a menu window open up asking what you want to do with this file source. Copy to PC is quite a usual command, choosing 'to desktop' makes it easy to access.

Next step is to open an account with a photo host. Sounds complicated but is a cinch, there are several free ones (no point in paying if you don't need to).

The photo host makes available the necessary codes which the forum software uses to display the image. Just follow the instructions from the photo host (I use 'Photobucket') and once 'uploaded' to the host (you don't lose your image to the host, it remains on your PC, they just use a copy) you will find that beneath each image are a selection of 'codes'. Copy the 'image' code - img - and in the reply window on the forum, 'paste' the img code. You will not see the picture in the reply window, just the code as a string of alpha-numerics. To see how the picture comes out you need to ckick 'preview'.

TIP: When loading your image from the PC to the host, try and keep the image size to 100kb, this makes the upload quicker and suits the forum software better. Changing the file size has been a challenge for some. There is a simple little program from Microsoft HERE which adds the resizing option to a drop down menu when right clicking.

ONE MORE: Once an image is loaded to the host, it needs to remain there to be displayed on the forum. If you re-arrange photos within the hosts album facilities, or remove them, they will disappear from the forum post in which you posted them.

There will always be a little trial and error involved, but shout if you get stuck.
