Londons proposals for cable cars are submitted Randstat

Plans for a cable car link across the Thames have been submitted to the local authority for approval.

Transport for London have sent the £25million proposals to Newham and Greenwich councils and the Thames Gateway Corporation. Project plans indicate that the cable car scheme would connect east London's Royal Docks with the O2 arena in south-east London.

If approved, the project will boost construction recruitment and create a number of engineering jobs in the capital. Each car is expected to carry 2,500 passengers an hour, which is the equivalent of 50 bus loads. As reported by the London Evening Standard, the planning application notes that cable cars are thought to be 'one of the most reliable forms of public transport in the world.'

Although a fare structure has yet to be devised, Transport for London plan to integrate the cable car service into the Oyster system. It is thought, single fares for Oyster Card users will be £2.50 and others will be charged £3.50. Mayor of London Boris Johnson said the scheme would provide "a unique and pioneering addition to London's skyline."

The Royal Docks station would be home to the systems electric motor and the 'drive station,' and the Greenwich station would be the "return station" and home to the cable car garage. The two towers would be 85 metres high, with several other towers between the stations.

The Mayor's transport adviser Kulveer Ranger said: "A cable car would be a unique addition to the capital's transport network, providing spectacular views of London's skyline whilst providing a much needed boost to river crossings in the east of the city."

I don't suppose the DLR would be happy about this after making an expensive tunnel under the river.
