BMC 1500 Starter Motor

Title says it all really - Starter turns the engine over normally for a second, then dis-engages and just whirrs. I could understand it if it weren't engaging to start with, but I cant get my head round what might be happening here to disengage it except missing flywheel teeth. I don't think that can be the case, as it then cranks on the next try (until it whirrs again a second later).

 

They have a window of opportunity of a second to get it running, so the ezy start is being pressed into summer service.

 

Battery is 100%.

Bad electrical connection or corroded cable somewhere would be my guess.

Could be a weak solenoid on the starter motor not being able to hold the cog in place. Think it might be called the bendix gear....someone will correct me if I'm wrong....which isn't unknown!!

Here you go, this is what it is, for sure and certain. The pinion assembly incorporates a one way roller clutch, it's slipping.

Thanks Snibbs - would it be best for a reconditioned unit or specific repair do you reckon?

Takes me about half an hour to swap one presuming there is nothing else wrong. I would call that economical but you should check with an auto electrician local to you or do the job yourself. I can talk you through it if you like but I would want to see one or two pics.
