lennybhoy Posted July 28, 2010 Report Share Posted July 28, 2010 hello all first many thanx for letting me join your club,the question i wish to ask is this i have just bought a lister st3 with a start handle and a starter motor what is the way to start using the starting motor do i need to lift the decompression levers as by hand or is the motor able to start the engine with the compression levers down i ask as it would be a pain to keep having to open the engine hatch every time to start,if this sounds daft please excuse me as i am only a humble bricky lol Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

To answer your question, most starter motors will happily start an engine with the compression levers down. Sometimes when it's particularly cold or the battery is tired it may be benificial to lift the decompression levers for extra turning speed before dropping them. Happy boating, Mike many many thanx for that mike i was unsure as to the prob.now just got to fit the throttle cable up to w/house thought i might have to fit a strart/run /strangle cable too but might just wing it for now ,starting engine in run position, then strangle by hand once again many many thanx Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The normal method of stopping an S series Lister is with a cable operated stop button which cuts off the fuel to the pumps. As a temporary or emergency measure you could use the decompressor levers, but strangling the air intake is no recommended except as a last resort when everything else fails.
