propeller bearing housing

Featured Posts

I am fairly new to boat maintenance but I am having a problem with my prop housing bearing overheating and burning all the grease out and seizing up. This happened after I dragged a bed pillow/string/ mattress on my prop for an hour before realising what was happening. I cleaned the prop out and then had to have my engine mountings reset/tightened but after about 30 hours of cruising the housing started heating up and my cruising speed had to be reduced to about 1/1/2 MPH. I would like to check this out myself and repair it or change it. Has anybody done this that can advise me on how to do it.

Please reply to this email address :- desert_rat_57@yahoo.co.uk with a phone number if possible. Thanks for any assistance Cheers bob smith

My guess would be that when that was done the alignment was put miles out. I'll await the experts to tell you the best way to align engine/box and output shaft. In the mean time it might help if you could say what engine/gearbox and coupling you have.

Photos are always good.

I agree, it depends on how the mountings were re-tightened!

You need to re-check the alignment of the shaft, however it is the packing in the stern gland that is generating the heat and forcing the grease out and this may need re-packing.

It happened to us after we went over two big wheelie bins and I am still not convinced they heavn't bent the bottom of the boat!

The gland packing was replaced and everything was reset, do you think I should do it again? I dont know what the gearbox is at the moment but it is a ord escort engine  cheers bob

May just be that the packing is over tightened.

Slacken the two gland nuts right back, give it plenty of grease and run in gear gently until the packing starts to leak water, then nip up the gland until it *just* stops leaking. Should be only a bit more than finger tight with new packing. Then grease it again to push the water out of the tube.

If it's still overheating, it's almost certainly an alignment problem
