Naughty Cal
Did anybody go to the Newark Boat Jumble? The weather was a little iffy first thing however after it had cleared a lttle, a few of us ventured out to the jumble. Didnt do too badly, we ended up with a bargain tin of antifoul at £30 instead of the usual £90, lets just hope it works effectively and a handheld VHF brand new for £50. Naughty Cal
Hi Phylis what type of vhf do you need for the canal, newbie question, We are based on the Fossdyke/Withan which connects with the Trent at one end and the sea at the other. All of the large locks are manned and you radio ahead to have them set for you when you arrive. We are getting a little cabin fever pottering around on the canals and rivers so this year are heading out to sea, so aswell as the inbuilt VHF set which came with the boat we have purchased a handheld version in case of electrical failure on the boat. To answer you question, you dont really need any VHF on the canals.

Some time ago VHF was upgraded so that distress calls could be automated and sets were coded with details of the call originator tied in with the licensing. Fixed licenced installations have to comply with maritime regs. The cheap hand held and older fixed sets do not compy with regs and are available quite cheaply on EBay & hand held even new. They are useful on rivers, even the Weaver, and it will not be long before the Thames passage Brentford/Limehouse/Teddington they become mandatory. I think even now someone exiting Limehouse has to have VHF and is assigned as 'Squadron Leader'.
