It was probably me who was 'making a case' for carpet underlay but I was certainly not suggesting it was in any way superior to the purpose built laminates. The material that T W Marine sells is particularly effective I was simply making the point that the first option does work in conjunction with a heavy plywood enclosure and it is very cheap.
