Electric Outboards

We have a 36lb electric outboard on our little dinghy and it is fantastic. We have never had a problem with it and it is provinbg to be reliable. It has been in use for about two months now and no hiccups yet. It has survived a dunking to the bottom of the Nottingham Canal and still works. It isnt the fastest or most powerful motor in the world but for us the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Having an electric dinghy means we dont have to carry petrol on our diesel boat and we have rigged up the battery pack so that our boat Cal charges the outboard battery whilst underway. This has the added bonus that the outboard battery acts as a spare/extra leisure battery for Cal as well. All in all we are pretty impressed with our little package. So a thumbs up from us

Does anyone know how good electric outboards are? I've seen them advertised as doing 90 miles on a single charge for a 55GT engine pushing a 2 berth cruiser. Are they reliable?

Steve.

The distance cover can only be based on the size of the battery that its connected too/how well its charged at the start of the journey and how much you are prepared to discharge it (more than the recommended 50%?)

Have had a 55lb thrust O/B on my wife's dinghy which she used to go to work, never had a problem other than a bit slow against the tide. Current usage is roughly 1 amp per lb thrust so as Phylis points out time used is dependent on size of battery, how hard you work the O/B and size of O/B ( in terms of lbs thrust)

We have had electric outboards for about 7 years, using them everyday.
