Loose rudder\swan neck problem

Featured Posts

My Liverpool boat suffered from this problem, and so it seems does my little Springer. If they are similar , the set up is 2 bolts and a pinch bolt. Having loosened the 2 bolts on another boat out of the water this seemed to have no effect? I assume thererfore the pinchbolt should be tightened ? Seems a bit of a crude method , is there a way around this ?

Mine is a Liverpool boat too and has the same problem.

It's been loose now for nearly 12 months, I'm waiting till this winter when it comes out of the water for blacking to tighten the pinch bolt.

I don't fancy getting in the canal and doing it in the water.

Can't think of any other way of securing it.

Les.

There are normally two through bolts, one top, one bottom, if these are loose it allows the bolts to rock in the holes and eventually snap the bolts or worse the rudder stock.

The third bolt in the middle is designed to firmly fix the stock and rudder and normally has a locking nut on it, however if the bolt has a rounded end or the rudder stock wears they too can rock. This happens every time you are out and move the rudder, or while you are moored up and another boat passes!
