  1. I have a Stovax with 3 rads and a small pump [cant read manufacturers label]. The pump has failed to operate a few times and the system has nearly boiled. Hence i am worried about leaving the fire lit when i am away from boat. The stove is at the front of the boat with an expansion tank 5 feet directly above. There is a radiator cap fitted to the tank which i have now left off to check the result. The pump itself operates from a thermostat sited on the 15 mm pipe out of the stove. The pump has only reqd a very light tap to get it working , when i heard bubbling noises from the pipes indicating a problem. Without boring everybody with superflous details i would like a little advice.......... Do you think the pump is naff or can i simply clean it . [Had the boat 3 months only just lit the fire] What should i do in order to make the system fail safe.
  2. I generally turn the pilot light off after use. But im sure 50 days is possible with careful use of gas equipment.
  3. I have a gas fridge ,cooker and paloma water heater. Replaced bottle yesterday. The old bottle supplied all my needs for 46 days. I live aboard. I have also fitted 2 x 65w solar panels. Havent run my engine for a month. Electric fridges ... not for me.
  4. Why should the pistons crack ? overheating maybe ?
  5. I know .65A is low but not sure how long pump runs in a 24 hour period ? As pointed the noise will be amplified at night when trying to sleep. The pipes are 25 mm to 3 rads . Boat is only 39 ft long. Should be warm in winter [i hope]
  6. i have a brunel with a back boiler. it has a thermostat and small pump. I tested the pump and was surprised to find it consumed 650 milliamps ? It is also a bit noisy. Is there a quieter pump out there which takes less current. Think its a Jabsco.

  8. Havent followed this thread, so apologies if i blunder in. Yup looks and age are good........... but its price , price ,price , that really sells a boat. Want a quick sale knock off £10k , otherwise its a waiting game.
  9. I was in Curries today and was tempted by their kit at£78.00.But is a std aerial system better ?
  10. Have decided to purchase 1 or 2 solar panels , plus a reg. I have seen threads on this subject, but my ? is simple. I have 330ah of batts and only a 60a load over 24 hours. I was thinking of 2 65w panels , mainly because of the price. Each one can be switched independantly inhot, sunny weather. Plus 130 w seems better in the winter. Where is the best place to purchase solar panels? Dont want to get bogged down on calculations etc, simply is there a good company out there somewhere?
  11. My new [old] boat has a gas fridge,Electrolux. Bit small but works fine, really does save on diesel and pointless engine wear. Have gas detectors fitted. Will post how long a 13kg bottle lasts. [ My concern is running the engine just to charge batteries ]
  12. My Liverpool boat suffered from this problem, and so it seems does my little Springer. If they are similar , the set up is 2 bolts and a pinch bolt. Having loosened the 2 bolts on another boat out of the water this seemed to have no effect? I assume thererfore the pinchbolt should be tightened ? Seems a bit of a crude method , is there a way around this ?
  13. Sold my boat for 29k and bought another for 19k. The former was 57 feet ,the latter 39 feet. It is a 1989 Springer, but in excellent condition. Infact i prefer it to the liverpool boat i sold. It was difficult to value and i expect i have paid its max value. Probably worth between 16 to 19 k. However it was just what i was looking for, so a done deal. She has a mitsubishi 4 cyl k series engine, anybody have a manual for sale? Im sure someone stated they had one on a previous thread. By the way my 3g modem is totally useless here, had to buy a Vodafone dongle. Its slow but at least it works. It also cuts out occasionally, annoying to say the least.
  14. Thats why as boaters we should all pull together. There are to many user groups, we are a divided community. United we stand , divided we fall , has never been more appropriate.
  15. Intersting, sorry no pics....yet.
  16. Thanks Cat, does that mean the boat still to be lifted out?
  17. rolleyes: Well i have managed to sell my boat. I have also found a nice little 40 footer as a replacement. There is a questionmark as to whether she is a Springer or not? I am told she has a slight v bottom? The last survey was completed 6 years ago, it was good. It stated some wear but only to a maximum of .2 of a mm.[ my memory aint to good] I beleive the bottom plate to be 5 or 6 mm and she was built 1989. Bear in mind i have only had the one quickish look. My ? is if she had so little wear after some 14 years , what will she be like 6 years later? Not blacked for 6 years either,so anodes possibly worn. Im trying to avoid a survey but im slowly talking myself out of it.Funds are tight as usual and i cant see the seller helping out . Main point is i like the boat. Looked at several and this one really stands out as just right for me.Sort of a gut feeling i suppose.
  18. Keep the line the same width, much easier. Use any tape that can be left on for a week or more.[b&Q , Wickes, both supply a good blue tape] Bite the bullet, tape up to the existing line and scotch brite the surface, undercoat ,then top coat. There is no easier method apart frtom vinyl tape.

  22. Recently cast my eye over a boat that had been surveyed 6 years ago. At that time the wear was minimal at .2mm. Thats point 2mm. The boat is 20 years old. Should the hull still be good today? It has not been out of the water in that time. Initial steel thickness 5 or 6mm.
