Notice is hereby given that safety gates are to be installed close to Lingards Bridge on the Leigh Branch of the Bridgewater Canal. The gates are required to further protect the canal due to the close proximity of fissures that cross the canal.

During the above works the Bridgewater Canal will be closed to navigation 30 metres on either side of the works.

The works will commence on Monday 10th November 2008 and continue until Friday 30th January 2009 or until such time as is necessary to complete the works.

For pleasure craft travelling from Leigh towards the stoppage the last winding hole is to the West of Morleys Bridge (A580 East Lancs Road). The last winding hole on the East side of the works is Bridgewater Marina at Boothstown.

The towpath in the locality of the works will be restricted with local diversions in place as necessary.

Craft wishing to use Worsley Dry Dock or facilities at Bridgewater Marina at Boothstown (from the Manchester direction) are unaffected by the stoppage.

Due to the nature of the works it is unlikely that navigation will be temporarily restored during the Christmas / New Year period.

The Company apologizes for any inconvenience caused by these necessary works. Updates on the work will be issued as necessary.
