Feeling very pleased with ourselves. We went down the top two SH locks backwards having removed the bow and stern fenders with just a hands breadth of clearance to open the gates!

Hurrah!

Well done! How long is the boat with fenders removed? Did you try frontwards first?

We are just 60' to the ends of the fixed metalwork. No we didn't try forwards first. As we entered the lock of knowledgeable local said that we wouldn't make it so we didn't try.

If you're just 60' then knowledgeable local is probably wrong. However, it would have been very tight, so you were safer to do it the way you did as it keeps the skeg away from the cill!

You shouldn't have needed to do the second lock down backwards, though.

I've come down the 4th lock on the Black Delth Junction flight on Dudley canal backwards 2 years ago, why ?

because there was not enough water in the next pond to fill the lock, never noticed before going in.

Well it had been a long day

It's fairly clear then that Ripple's 62 feet ain't gonna fit is it?

been down several locks backwards, usually for a place to leave the boat for a few days and then can't be bothered going to next winding hole (the two above Fradley Junction). Once went up Old Ford on the River Lee backwards, push-towing a huge steel wheelie bin. It was in the semi-tidal days and the bailiff asked us to retrieve it after vandals had thrown it in and before the tide came in. It made our broad beam hire cruiser so unmanageable thet backwards was how we had to go
