I bought a Smartphone from Ebay for £11 unlocked with a charging problem. It's a Nokia Android thing.  I fixed the charging fault ok. Set it all up fine to use, but what worries me is because I had to use my laptops Google password to set it up I'm worried because I can't find a security suite on it at all , like AVG for example so if I use it I might get bad bugs and scams and all sorts because it is alied to my laptop by google and I don't want my laptop infected with nasties if I use it. I tried to download AVG FREE on it it's browser but it refused to do it.Thanks in advance.

You can download security programs (including AVG) free from the google play store.

I've been using android phones for a long time and never felt the need to use anything apart from the updates they supply.

To Add Google Play Store is an app already installed on android phones. When you sign in to google on the phone, you sign in to the play store, and have access to mostly free, and some paid for Apps (applications)

Play store App Icon looks like this:

I searched for updates on it and the only one goes back to 2020 probably when it was new.

No mecanno required.

That's a shame, a nice big sprocket and chain in it would work. I'll try the Googe store, thank you.

Updates are only supported for a certain number of years. If the phone is over 5 years old, its possible they have stopped issuing Android updates for it.

On my phone, there is a menu labelled 'system updates' under the setting menu (little cog). It tells me when the last update occurred, and check for new updates. Yours may be different, but it will have a settings menu somewhere.

When you buy a new android device (phone, chromebook etc), you can check for how many years they will issue updates for the device. The device can still be used without the updates, but obviously isn't as protected from malicious threats.

Degoogling them only gets rid of the Google apps, not the basic android operating system, which is the bit that no longer gets updates. It is the phone manufacturer, rather than Google that decides how long you get updates for the basic operating system. It's not right, but it is the way it is. There are a few community lead projects that replace the manufacturers software with their own and can keep an older phone going. They need courage and some knowledge to install. Easy to brick the phone. DAMHIK.

One manufacturer that gives longer updates than most is Fairphone.

So basically Jen folk are forced to keep buying new smartphones every so often when they're still working fine. What a con.
