With a door or stop planks at one end, the barge is sunk to allow the boat to be worked on to enter it, the door/stop planks are replaced, water pumped out and you then have a floating dry dock with a boat inside. This may be a realistic option if space allows. Someone (an occasional forum contributor and decent boat painter) did try to bring a widebeam size dry dock from somewhere on the Nene to the GU, and tow it along and work from it. I recall CRT put a stop to it as it was too large to fit through locks, therefore would not have been able to fulfil the range required by the 'boat without home mooring' licence.
