Apparently the prisoners were all volunteers, so not exactly a Cool Hand Luke chain gang. One thing's certain, however: none of the volunteers could have imagined people willingly leaping between the girders over fifty years later.

 

It would seems the gaol being Gloucester is given on a plaque by the lock. I may even have read it myself, but was at this point just commencing my journey down the Avon with friends on another boat, full of plans for the day.

Interesting, David Hutchins must have used both prisons for volunteers. The area around Marlcliff was very shallow and possibly apocryphal but thought true Long Lartin prisoners used explosives to deepen the channel. 🤣
