Well, there's a surprise.

Due to current restrictions on the Trent & Mersey, Caldon & Macclesfield canals, we are seeing limited boats requiring passage through Harecastle tunnel.

From Friday 19th August, we are looking to implement a booking system for passage through the tunnel. This will allow us to utilise the resource of staff in other areas.

Booking will be required 24 hours before passage and can either be done by contacting our customer services department on 03030 404040 or emailing direct to eventsnorthstaffs@canalrivertrust.org.uk

We will then contact you direct to arrange a suitable time for passage between the hours of 8am and 12pm. For any other information and direct tunnel enquires please email eventsnorthstaffs@canalrivertrust.org.uk

But it is a bit pointless having someone sat there all day on the off chance a boat turns up.

Well of course it is. So why keep it open in the first place? The locks both sides are closed, the Caldon's shut and the top of the Macc is. Who on earth did they think was going to use it?

It will be interesting to see if it opens for a turn up passage ever again.
