So, having been such an entertaining and interactive (not to mention provocative thread…. Alan?) did we ever get to the bottom of this?
How about a different view…
Is there not something that could be said for these so called reproduction “washer Joshers “ that will not ask a future question, stir the mind and tell a story once the present custodians of such true originals with real rivets have long since demised along with their beloved craft?
Despite my horror at such a thought it is eventually going to happen, like it or not.
Let’s all build boats along practical lines without these “embellishments” in which case nobody will ever ask a question and the history of such may be lost forever, if only to the laymen .
Yes… that’s it let’s just bin history and concentrate on the practicalities of today!
That view is ok in our (very selfish) lifetime given our historical knowledge but what will be left after the current originals have long since gone and all that is left are un-embellished, practical non-washer Josher alternatives and what will folk of the future make of these?
Maybe we should take practicality to the extreme and make floating boxes that can be stacked bow to stern in order that moorings could be maximised in terms of accommodation, and how about a bulk purchase of bog grey paint so that we all know that we have done it on the cheapest basis?
Oh hang on, is there something to be said for personal preference after all … ?
