these transponders normaly can be pulled out from the inside and as you do a flap /gate moves into place to prevent magor water ingress. you can then cleen the paddle wheel. you should not put anything on them only cleen them. if your boat is mored up for any length of time remove the paddle and place the cap or replacment bung untill you sail again then revers the process. its a pain but there is no other option.

the most inportant thing is to get the tides right as if you plan it right it can be done in one tide. make your arivals at any lock/marina at slack water as there are strong cross tides at the entrance and will make manovering dificult. aproch agenst the tide if there is any as it will slow your speed but maintain stering. a wide beem will cope no problem. as to equipment you dont need any thing not even a VHF but what is prudent i wood serjest. set of up to date charts and hand held GPS hand held VHF (you need a lince to operate it ) set of nav lights life jackets long moring lines mobil phone and a reeds pilot binoculars are handy for reeding signs an ancor and 30m of chain/rode a nolage of col regs and navigation marks. if in doubt take some one with tidal water experance. a pilot wont realy help he will only now were to go nothing about the boat its handling and abilaty.

as far as i know there is no problem, and they are fitted to every production yacht made nowdays. there are 4 on my boat as seen in the avitar.

big breather is a good point but 500l is the best we can do for tank size but i will ask the builder when we get near that stage but i am restricted as i want prefab plastic tanks.

sorry did not make it clear 500l for red 500l for 28sec have had a google and it seems 500l is the minimum for most bulk deliverys so plan would be to run heating all winter and then order 500l in spring when tank is empty and have 2x25l jerry in case it wont all fit.

we are planing a system with 2 tanks of 500l so to take advantage of the tax hear and in france the info you gave on heating fuel sounds like a good idear whats the minimum order you can get for domestic delivery. i know the lorries come with long hoses so if i went to a sutable moring cant see why i cant buy 500l at a time bulk buy. do you think this is viable?

so the potential saving is the fact that it takes twice as much power to replace whats been taken from the batteries is there any merit in the asumption that the fridge is more eficent when working hard insted of ticking over all night

have you measured the saving dont you need energy to freeze the blocks in the first place. what i dont undrestand is if this was a good idear all fridges would coome with a holding plate but these seem to have died out as an option ! i cant get my head round how you are saving any power thats why im asking.

is it worth turning the fridge of at night to save power? does it realy work? dont you have to replace the loses in the morning anyway? can you all give me the prows and cons please. am sat by the switch awating the outcome

we are having a sailaway built we are using a builder with 2 generation of experiance behind them an owners club which i think is always a good sign and last of all we are paying 15% up front and the finall balance 85% once we see the finished boat i put a good deal of fath in a builder that can finance 85% of the build we have said at what stages we wish to inspect the boat and make final desisions. also as we dont live near the builder a friend who does is going to visit oftern and take picturs. but i do still have fingers and toes crossed.

one of the main reasons is for when running the engin for battery charging ie in generator mode. we are going to have a large amount of wind and solar so am hoping to opt out of using a seprate generator all still in the planning stage

i am thinking of the beta 50 with cocoon and hospital exaust to go on a 45x12ft barge should have enough room.

has anyone got any experance with a cocooned main engin are they as quiet as clamed does the case make them hard to maintain are they worth the extra money as aposed to better engin compartment sound insulation any pros or cons please.

i am wondering at what point it is ecnomic to install a gen to run insted of the main engin at £4-5k plus runnig cost plus maitanance etc plus seprate fuel tank to take advantage of tax on fuel is it realy worth it or spend half the cost on alternator upgrade and a decent solar and battery system.

i was thinking about running a seprate creem of for charging all mu rechargable small batteries etc. per haps that will work for you. the trick is to get it to bypas automaticaly i wonder if one of the smart gage gizmos will do it? i to am looking at hot water solar but far from easy on a boat!

so are you saying your system never has any spair power? on your outback can you use the Programmable Auxilary Control Output to switch on a 12v emersion via a relay once there was spear power above what was neded to charge the bats ie when on float.

cast iron are usualy considerd best.

what do you do with the summer surplus? or what could you do with it? you may remember from another post i intend to use the 12v imersion, have you any idear what your summer surplus would acheve say on 100l of water if you used one? what do you think is the sweet spot for bat size?
