  1. Thank you David, that was a concern of mine the security and sturdiness of the mounting around the hole.Looking at the Lee Sanitation site where I purchased the pan only nine months ago,it stated the hole should be 141mm.
  2. Glad I found this subject as yesterday I started to remove my toilet, a dump through Sealand .I believe the mild steel tank has started to perish so I need to change the tank. I have looked on the internet and at plastic manufacturers and have to decide. I must say I have never found any problem with the dump through toilet and I have had the boat 18 years. I have removed the toilet and the wash hand basin all of which sat on the tank. So I need a tank that is strong enough to take some of the weight. I was interested to read Davids comments about the strength of his plastic waste tank so I am leaning in that direction.
  3. Martin made our rear doors after I initially had some made and fitted by a so called welder. He made a fantastic job and was very quick. I cannot praise him enough after my first encounter was an absolute nightmare.I would definitely recommend him.
  4. Thank you all for the comments, they have been most helpful. I will first check the alignment of the shaft to the gearbox. If l were to change the flexible coupling I think I would have to go for one of a similar size otherwise the shaft may be to short. I think a Coniflex. I would welcome any suggestions. Regards.
  5. Thanks Ray,by coincidence I was only looking at Roy's site yesterday regarding the Delta write up on there.As many people have said in reply to my questions a lot of the problems may well be alignment, which I will check.cheers Roy.
  6. I hear what your saying May I had That my boat is 25 years old and the set up is the as when as when I got her. She was out of the water last year so I took the opportunity to change the worn Stern gear. I checked and found it worn it had been knocking for some time.I also changed the propeller. I also changed the Vetus engine mounts and replaced them like for like with Vetus Hydraulic which is the correct mountings for a Vetus three cylinder engine. I know that three cylinder engines are notorious for rocking but it is not two bad especially with the new mountings. I thought that I had set it up quite well but obviously not. I believe it is the movement of the shaft engaging that causes the problem I also see what people are saying about alignment and that the stern gland is the only form of fixed point. My concern was that the age of the flexible couple may have contributed to the problem as opposed to all the new items that I replaced.

Yes you are right, ideally I would love to have fitted a block but the distance is quite short also the steel plate which separates the bilge area is very low and would have to be built up a lot higher.I also forgot to add the new propeller is slightly bigger. The old coupling is 20 years old and I think needs replacing.Also when I renewed the engine mountings I did re align the shaft to the gearbox. It is now a matter of deciding which flexible coupling do I choose.
  9. The shunt is connected to the negative terminal of the leisure batteries as described in the NASA diagram.

The negative lead from my batteries is connected to the shunt with the leads from the battery charger connected to the battery terminals.My NASA has always given me voltage and current readings from my leisure battery's accurately. So why should it be that when I temporarily connected the mobitronic charger via the crocodile clips I got no current reading.Could it be that the LED inside the Mobitronic is interfereing with my NASA ie that it has its own shunt system inside blocking my NASA.
  11. I am after some advice please, last year I changed my stern tube, Prop shaft and propeller due to wear of the shaft and bearing and my Vetus engine mounts. The mistake I made was that I did not change the flexible coupling on the shaft but used the existing one as it looked fine to me.. The problem I have is that when I engage gear the initial movement of the shaft moving towards the gearbox is causing my stern tube to leak water more than it should. I have adjusted the stern tube but still get the leaking. I believe that at the time of changing all my stern gear I made a big mistake in not changing the flexible coupling. I am also getting a slight leak from the 'o' ring on the Delta gearbox. All I believe from the same problem. My question is what flexible coupling should I use? My engine is a Vetus M 3-10 with a Delta gearbox. I Have searched this site and others looking to identify my coupling without success. I am wondering if it is some type of Bull flex coupling and if so should I go with something similar? I am sure I will get the answers I am after here as I have never been disappointed before. I have attached a picture of my coupling.
  12. Ian,as you probably guessed I placed them directly onto a battery.But thinking about it my leads that feed my existing charger are also connected straight to the battery and my NASA always shows the current reading.
  13. TomasK, Thanks for the information on the instructions. Although I started this topic I have still not fitted the Charger. Cleared a fault on my old Mobitronic and have used it all this summer. I still have the new charger and may well fit it in the winter. I did try it earlier in the year just to test it and used it with the crocodile clips to the batteries. What I did notice was that My NASA battery gauge failed to show the current rate of charge at all. There is an inbuilt small LCD display at one end of the Numax charger. I can only assume that this LCD affected the reading of the NASA battery gauge.

  15. Yes, the baguette boat is a bit of an obstruction for larger boats. If you are moored in the basin when it is very busy you also have to watch the Avon diner/trip boat. Last summer whilst we were moored, the trip boat came back from a lunchtime trip steered by a "boy racer" turned at speed an on reversing struck the rear of a moored 70 ft private boat. That is one of the reasons we love to moor on the river. I lost count of the times we have been moored up and felt the boat move whilst eating a meal only to find a group of tourists climbing on the boat and takings pictures. Still love the place.
  16. Is connecting to the starting battery but still having the option to change over to the leisure battery a viable option then Ecky Thump?
  17. If my memory serves me right the new couple came in during the summer. I do know what people mean with regards to the previous incumbent. He was short on customer courtesy and always thought that he was doing you a favour. Not the right attitude if you are providing a service at a country pub.
  18. Cheers Phil, I will have to change the wiring when I fit the new charger as the leads for the Electroquest are on the opposite side so I think I will follow your example so I can switch the one feed between starter and leisure.
  19. I moor my boat on the Stratford canal, and my wife and I often cruise to Stratford. We love this canal with a passion. I found the comments about the Fleur De Lys very interesting. How long ago did members have problems with the miserable landlord? as the pub changed hands last year and I have found that the new people who now run it are more boater friendly. Admittedly the moorings on the pub side could do with some updating but at this point in the canal banking that side is shaped like a dogs hind leg. I have noticed over the years that the locks are getting harder and I put this down to a combination of the wife and I getting older and lack of maintenance. The design of the bottom gates leads to rubbish collecting behind them and hence they do not go back in their seating. hence if you leave fenders down watch out as you may well get wedged between the gate. I also agree with the comment about the Anglo Welsh hire base. I have sort advice/ help several times over the years and was let down every time, they appear "not bothered" Also if your a single handed boater you will find several of the gates will open on their own, especially a couple on the Wilmcote flight. I have seen regular single boaters using mop handles or a piece of 3x2 to wedge open the gates. All that said it is still a beautiful canal.
  20. Phil, have you connected both outputs of the charger, one to the starter battery and the other to the leisure batteries? On my Mobitronic I only have one output connection and this is connected to the leisure batteries. I am wondering whether to connect both outputs to the leisure batteries as my starter battery always appears charged enough from just cruising.
  21. After some research on this site and several favourable comments by members I decided to replace my 20 amp Mobitronic with the Electroquest 30 amp model. I have three 110 amp leisure batteries and one 110 amp starter. My Mobitronic only has one output with is connected to the leisure batteries. I have never had problems with the starter. I charge the system when out cruising with a Honda 1000 generator. My faithful Mobitronic has started to get very hot and the fan comes on as soon as it is switched on, so I think its on the way out. Are there any members that have the Electroquest fitted so that I may get there opinions on its operation. I would be grateful of any help.

  23. Alan, I know it has been some time since your original posting regarding the Electoquest charger but I thought it may be interesting to hear your views having used it now since 2013. I purchased this model yesterday after reading all the previous comments on the make and model. I must say I agree with some of your initial comments regarding the instructions sent with the charger, they are awful. I have yet to fit the charger on the boat so any comments you can add will assist me greatly.

I think that CRT lost a great opportunity here to promote themselves.They have improved their public image over the last couple of years by allowing the public to see how they renovate repairs I.E Lock chambers etc,which I think is great.How often do you get to see part of the canal like this in the City of Birmingham.
  25. This topic has been very illuminating from day one. I for one will miss the banter and exchanges that have gone on. I would personally like to thank all the members who have taken time to post some great pictures of this stoppage, without their input we would have been in the dark. CRT have not been that forthcoming with information and it has taken the members to go out of their way in order to update us. Having floated over this site many times in my boat it great to see what's underneath. Also we could have formed a Canalworld team of volunteers to clear up some of the rubbish and other items from the bed of the canal but no doubt health and safety would have stopped this.
