  1. ...and maybe it's not. One doesn't have to be an expert in a particular subject to make a comment about it; and in any case, if you'd read my post carefully you'd have realised that I was not expressing my own opinion, I was quoting an opinion passed on to me by someone who IS knowledgeable. In addition, my post was intended as a stimulus to discussion, and as you can see it has worked. That apart, I agree with you entirely.
  2. Why? I don't read topics about batteries, as they are of no interest to me as long as they keep working. I read this one because a post had been reported by a member. Yes, he particularly mentioned the danger in connection with electric cars.
  3. I was warned away from lithium batteries by a professional who told me that, if one catches fire, it's almost impossible to put it out.
  4. O.K., yar. It has a South Efrican tinge!
  5. ...as, it seems, is "yars", a measure with which I am unfamiliar. Are they like years but shorter?
  6. ...or more recently, if news reporting is to be believed, "river". I'think that both "sewage farm" and "sewage works" are still in use in popular parlance; "sewage treatment plant" would be the official term for such an installation.
  7. Thanks. What most people would call a "sewage farm", then.
  8. A whatty? I know STP as a brand of motor oil, which does exude a smell, but of a quite different nature.
  9. I have read such an allegation, but I am not sure that there's any proof.
  10. interesting: while I have seen this done with old vinyl records, I didn't know that shellac went soft when heated. ...and they can be attractive. Trouble is, people tend to use old records which they have no hope of selling; I wonder how many households have a Gary Glitter clock. There is a fellow on the waterways called "Croc" who snaps (?) up worthless old L.P.s and, using some sort oh heated cutter I suppose, sculpts them into pictures and sells them from his boat. He's very good at it too; he did us a nice little Trojan helmet sculpture a couple of years ago.
  11. A Mud 45 perhaps? Or if you're luckier, Muddy Waters? Or even something by that dyslexic female punk group The Silts?
  12. You' remember Luke. He's about six feet four tall by one foot wide. A most pleasant fellow. Not all records have spent their lives sitting demurely in clean, civilised households, and the onslaught of dust, dirt, smoke, greasy finger marks, beer spillage and whatever to which many have been subjected is probably more damaging than canal water. Washing them in tepid, soapy water and wiping them round with a J-cloth usually removes much of such residue; the next stage up is applying lighter fuel to them and wiping them vigorously. For tough stains, isopropyl (sp?) alcohol can work wonders. I have heard of the method which you mention but have never invested in that type of equipment.
  13. Yes, the "cover-up", done by DJs to preserve the exclusivity of a rare and desirable record. For example, an instrumantal called 'Double Cooking' was known for years by fans as 'Strings A Go Go' until someone stumbled upon another copy and revealed its true title. I do hope that he was well insured, so that he can get his business going again. I was interested to learn that there's more than one waterborne vinyl dealer on the canals: some of you may have come cross Luke, a very tall fellow who operates 'The Record Deck'. I think he's still in business.
  14. Vynil records, are they dyslexic? Yes, vinyl records are waterproof, but their labels are often not. So you can play the record but you may not know what it is. Thew sleeves aren't waterproof either. Obviously, die-cut 45 sleeves will disintegrate quickly if saturated; many L.P. sleeves are laminated, but only on the outside, so water will seep in from the inside and severely distress them.
  15. From doing what, sorry? I missed the reference. Then you haven't been paying due attention. As I've said before, my spelling is impeccable, but my keyboard's is not. In this context, no doubt "errors of logic" = "not totally agreeing with me" - which is the life blood of a discussion forum, as I'm not sure you'll agree.

  18. I have heard that councils have an obligation to house homeless families but not single people, though perhaps this varies from one area to another.
  19. I don't think he has any - not living with him anyway. I've not seen them mentioned.
