  1. A little late to be adding a reply onto this perhaps, but 3 times Linnet has navigated the Irish Sea in getting from the Lancaster canal (at Glasson dock on the River Lune) to the main system (at Tarleton on the River Douglas), back to the Lancaster, and finally returning to the main line. All this was of course done without any of the modern gadets and radios that boats run with today, relying purely on my father's knowledge of the waters (a captain in the merchant navy) and on one run, the local knowledge of a fishing boat. It's worth pointing out that this was all long before the cruiser stern was removed, and on at least 1 occasion she was towing a wooden jolly boat Tishy (who's bow can just be seen in the picture below ) The trojan engine that did all this? The faithful SR2, and all of his 11 horse

    SR 2

Linnet still has the first engine she was given, one of the 1800rpm SR2's
  3. Meant the Ariel arriving in the area. I know you want to parade with a hold full of iron, dont worry
  4. The penny was just in with the junk. Loosly lodged in with the dirt under one of her 'modern' knees. We did briefly think maybe it was a marker of the build date, but then we realised if it was, it would have been under an original one
  5. The name Teabag is actually growing on me. I know there are a couple of people (in fairly high posistions) who support the name Teabag wholeheartedly!
  6. While stripping the dirt and rubbish out from behind the knees, we've uncovered: 3 old bullets the remains of some iron bearers (assumably from dredging equipment) an 1885 penny (spookily, the earliest date we have her on record for is 1885) We also found when clearing the mud from her hold that she had become the habitat for mini shrimps
  7. It is snazzy, and is already planned into her paint work. No cabin yet, but the livery is alredy worked out
  8. The name is being changed for 2 main reasons: 1)I really don't like it 2)There is s hovering of people in BW who aren't sure that this is OHM There wont be any future owners until I'm dead, and then my kids will be under strict instructions lest I haunt them . Butty, like Linnet, has been bought as a family heirloom, for want of a better term. And she's going to be both butty and horse boat, because there's not a cat in hells chance that I'll be able to work her behind Sunday all the time. When that occurs, I've got a selection of possible motors for her to run behind, not least of all being Linnet. So far no one has told me any stories of Butty, what's this about her being sunk at Farmers bridge? When was that? Quick edit to add: any photos?
  9. Hippodrohme.. hmm, I quite like the ring to that...
  10. The boat wasn't named for anyone. BW went into a phase of naming all their un-named hopper boats with 3 letter names, Ohm happends to be a word and a name with 3 letters and was so used. Mr Ohm may well have travelled into Birmingham, I don't deny that in the least. I fail to see how that affects my decision to rename the boat. She was given the name by BW when she was an uncared-for, open hopper boat. She is now much loved and undergoing paitent repair and restoration to turn her into a cabined butty/horse boat, and my home. She has a new job, and is getting a new name. Classy It's on the possible list
  11. I've nothing against Mr Ohm, but I don't like the name. I don't think it suits her for a start, and who's to say which Ohm the name refers to? The the river, the mathmatician or the physist? All the above are German too, and I'm not sure that a Birmingham boat would carry a German name..
  12. 'cause it's a rubbish BW name. She was only called it because they were going through the scrabble dictionary of 3 letter words
  13. Having run out of ideas myself, it's time to cast a wider net for Butty's sunday name You can obviously suggest the names here, to me personally or to Emerald at the National Historic Ships Register as part of the competition. Copied straight from what went out on the NHSR email: Dear friends We have been asked by the owner of narrowboat Ohm, cert 2380, to help them run a competition to name the boat asking other vessel owners to suggest what she might be called. Affectionately known as 'Butty', she is currently undergoing restoration in the Midlands and is destined to be returned to full horse (shetland pony) drawn condition. Built c 1860, records show that Ohm was owned by the Birmingham Canal Navigation Company until 1948 and a few years later, she was shortened, presumably to make her more suited to being towed by a motor boat or tug. You can read about her in full here: http://www.nationalhistoricships.org.uk/ships_register.php?action=ship&id=2380 There are no restrictions at all in the names people suggest for Ohm (other than decency!) and if your idea is successful, you will have the pleasure in knowing the vessel has taken the name you've suggested! If you have any ideas, please send them to me on this email address. Entries will be open from 1 May - 30 June and the competition will be judged by the vessel owner. Look forward to hearing from you! Kind regards Emerald Emerald.Laing@nationalhistoricships.org.uk
  14. Butty wont be in the parade this year; Ariel is carrying the kit of parts for the repair job, and only gets to Crick the week before the rally. I'm a fast worker, but I'm not a magician!
  15. I've a vague recollection of being told she was built short, shortened and lengthened again
  16. Butty has indeed been shortened at some point Hasn't Elland been shortened at some point?

  18. Oooh, didn't think of that...
  19. I'm sure he has his own point and his own opinions, which he's perfectly entitled to, but I don't give a monkeys what he or anyone else thinks of my boat. Butty's an old girl and in pretty original shape; but if she's to have any chance of surviving that way, she's got to be adapted to live and work on todays canals in todays world. Hang the "traditional" ways; the old boatman's view was to get on with the job however best it could be done. Besides, she's not his boat
  20. Every boat needs an engine room... It's in developmental stages, but yes there will be pony room on board
  21. The horse boat conversions were trials and experiments of steam boats, later followed by the motor boat tests, and before the steady motor-butty arrangement. Most ended up on the scrap heap as a bad job anyway though. By the time everyone had got to grips of the idea of a motor boat, it was New Toy Syndrome with the companies who rushed off to the builders to get in on the act
  22. Her auction length was 47'6", but it turns out shes a longer by over a foot. We reckon they just quickly measured the hold length as opposed to the full length, which does fit the discrepancy. She is going to be cabined, shes going to have an extended main cabin and a forecabin too; she's not a day boat anymore, shes a long distance traveller, and she'll be a home!
  23. With respect, I have spoken to the professionals and they beleive they can date the boat accuratly to a five year margin. Even if the metal is second hand (and the professional opinion is that it is not) it does at least give us a closer window to the actual production of the boat. It will certainly do her no harm to be carbon dated, and it is being done as a gift for the boat.
  24. She's definatley a BCN boat, although opinion is divided as to whether she is a Bantock or something earlier that Mr Bantock then later copied with his boats. Records can trace her back to 1885, but no further due to the destruction of earlier guage tables. We're going to have her carbon dated sometime in June/July to get a closer date on her age. We're hoping that she can be refloated next May; Ariel is carrying the repair kit of iron and steel down for her, which will arrive at Butty after Braunston Rally. That's when the restoration starts in earnest Oh, and just so everyone is clear; this boat WILL NOT be motorised. She's going to be rigged up to work as a horse-boat and a butty
