  1. Calling on the expertise of this forum again. Upgrading my control panel to the deluxe version and have replaced the water temperature sensor, but for the life of me can't find the oil pressure switch. Don't want to cut into the loom to trace the wire. Probably doesn't help that it's a Beta in a box. Can anybody point out where I should be looking. Many Thanks David
  2. Hi People I am looking to install a stern light but the best place is on the back of the gas locker. How do the regulations stand if I were to install a section of steel conduit or box section for the wiring which is sealed by welding from the rest of the locker. Would it pass BSS or do I start looking for an alternative mounting. Thanks David
  3. Thanks folks. I have gained some useful information from your replies. Much appreciated. David.
  4. Once more calling on the expertise out there. Whilst I am rewiring my boat I thought it would be a good idea to have a shore supply socket on both sides of the wheelhouse, rather than have cables running round or over the boat. Thankfully before doing anything I have realised that if I just tee the lines togeather I will have a 240v feed to the male socket which is not in use. Not a good idea methinks. I have looked at various sites but can find no double pole changeover switch that I would need, has anybody been faced with this problem and over come it or knows where I can find a suitable switch. David.
  5. Don't look for too may problems, modern marine engines are prety solid but don't forget the simple things, like a regular check routine and save the oil can for the waste oil on the next change. David
  6. Thanks gents. This all confirms my belief that the battery switch is in the wrong position, another builder cockup. Batteries being rewired in red and black and will tie alternator feed into batt +ve but with a little slack so it can be swung onto the master switch if examiner were to object. David
  7. Hi I am just in the process of rewiring my batteries (the builder has installed brown & blue cables)and making up new leads when I noticed that the domestic battery feed from the engine runs into the master switch and then on to the battery positive link with a lead from the battery to the trip panel. To my mind this set up means that if the master switch is removed the battery will not charge but the batteries will still feed the trip panel. I'm thinking that the lead from the engine should go to the positive side of the battery, then onto the master switch and on to the trip panel bus bar. This will issolate the battery from the trips but will leave it permanently wired to the alternator. Hope I've not made things too confusing. Am I right or just chasing my tail? David
  8. There is a very pleasant section above Kegworth Deep Lock. Don't be tempted to moor there as you are directly under the flight path for East Midlands Airport. Another vote for Zouch and the R&C.
  9. It was just the same in 1972. hope we don't have to wait 39 years for the next indian summer. Get some beers in while it lasts.
  10. Pillings Lock Marina just south of Loughborough. I believe they have some residential moorings and a fair selection of facilities.
  11. Thanks Tony. I know what has to be done now. I presume this also applies to the main battery feeds which are also brown and blue. Ben Harp strikes again. Next question. Can anybody recomend a firm that sells suitable standard red & black cable at reasonable prices, I think I may need quite a lot. David.
  12. Could I use black red and green for the mains or would the fact that the boat is less than two years old prevent that?
  13. Oh dear I think I may have a problem! I have shore supply and inverter on board - 240V using standard mains cable colours. Does the fact that it is all sheathed in a blue outer casing as in a normal extension cable make it OK or do I start replacing everything?
  14. The wiring on my boat is a job lot of blue and brown, the intention is to label what I can trace but to make life easier I would like to replace some of the low current items with different coloured cable. By low current I mean water and fuel tank sensors, central heating thermostats and the like. I can't see any restictions in the BSS papers but would appreciate the opinion of more experienced minds. David

    Wet paint ?

Oo er didn't mean to start an argument. Think I'll try a hot air gun in small doses as the problem is not so much cold steel as cold water cooling the steel below the water line. Above the water line there is no problem. Thanks for the suggestions David
  16. Dearly beloved I have a dillema. I want to repaint parts of the engine bay but the steel below the waterline has a tendancy to sweat. Is there any way round this without waiting for a boiling hot day next summer? David
  17. As I saw it, the two boats had chosen to travel togeather and as such should have incurred the inconvenience. I have given way to an old working boat and butty as I can quite happily consider them a pair. The same as if somebody was helping a boat in dstress. I just wondered if there was some ruling or custom to give way to people who wanted to cruise togeather.
  18. I dare say this topic has been covered before but I can't pick it up on the search engine. Moored up at Kings lock last week on the Leicester section with another boat. I was waiting to wind due to the water situation but the boat with us was waiting a partner to lock through with. Two boats turned up and the first went into the lock, it was pointed out to the second nb that there was a boat waiting to go up which had been waiting for a partner. A rather snooty woman on the second boat shouted back that they were freinds with the first boat and had been paired since March so they took preference over a boat on its own and carried on into the lock. Surely this setup does not constitue a pair but two singletons traveling in comany. Am I wrong? Needless to say the family on the waiting boat were most unimpressed, especially as they had waited to pair up at the request of BW staff. David
  19. Thanks Mark It looks like you haven't just answered my question but Tonys as well. David
  20. Hi Tony Tried that but it's nearly 4 turns lock to lock so I can have 3 positions for a midships rudder. David
  21. I'm looking for a rudder indicator. Had planned on Vetus, having a Vetus winch and bow thruster. All the pictures make them look good but seeing one on the Vetus stand at the IWA left me thinking it looked a bit flimsy. Surely somebody on this forum has dealings with them and can point me in the right direction.
  22. It has been mentioned several times about only being able to visit by appointment. In my case I put it down to another H&S regulation wherby people cannot enter a worksite unaccompanied. I of course now know that in the Harps case regulations and contracts are only quoted when it suits. David.

  24. Check out Nb Waiouru blog. Enough said I think. David
  25. Had a wide beam on the Nene and got fed up of same old scenery so narrow beam now but no regrets either way.( About the size of boat that is) Easch has its own merits.
